|mruff5||I've had three Jeeps and they have all had the 2.5 4cyl. and after I buy them I always wish I would have gotten the 6... The 4 cyl's have always been reliable for me but are gutless. They work fine once you wind them up but have to bottom end power. As far as gas mileage, I get 19 on average and most people are getting 17-18 with the 6's and trust me I would be willing to sacrifice 2 mpg for the 6's power and longevity.|

|97rangler||got a 2.5 in mine, it was the right truck at the time. i had 31s and 3.07s now 35s and 4.56s. it goes great not a powerhouse by any means. sucks on the freeway but it goes offroad all day long and if i get stuck winch it im not proud when it comes to using the winch. you have to upgade the 2.5 more than the 4.0. what im trying to say 4.0 is great 2.5 hasnt let me down with 120000 miles on it. although i do hve my eye on a 4.6 liter out of a mustang........money damn money. btw dont buy it for power cause they both dont have any|

I was int he same boat recently and i picked up a 4 banger because it was the right truck at the right price.
I had a 4.0 XJ before and I have got to say that the MPG's are pretty much the same although the 4.0 was a normally powered car, if you wanna call it that meanwhile the 2.5 really is weak and it takes time and effort for it to keep up with traffic.
And thats exactly where your gas goes. Trying to drive normal speeds, you have to let it rev to almost 3K in 1st, quick shift, and so on through the gears until fifth.
Oh and GET READY to downshift at every upward slope, highway too!
All in all I love the wrangler for what it is, i dont really care that some give me looks for going too slow and the down shfting to keep up is kinda fun.
You get the excitement of shifting through gears a lot, especially with the 4.11s in the rear.
All in all, 4 or 6, doesnt matter! Both are reliable, neither will be a powerhouse nor will either be great on gas, so i say: find the right TJ for you and get it!

AK, thanks for the response. I was wondering how it would fare in the snow. Very limited with snow here in southern (communist) California. Did great in the 4 inch dusting we received, but curious on the more manly amounts. Guess I'll have to give it a try in Montana.

|05GT-O.C.D.||My 1st Jeep was a 4cyl and I was happy with it enough that I bought another 4cyl. My current Jeep is the 6, and while it's better, I got around just fine w/ the 4. The only problems I had w/ the 4 was towing uphill at highway speeds. While the 6 is much better, it's still no power monster.|

|AKWrangler||I have the 2.5L and I am happy with it, I use it for a daily driver and I get about the same mileage as everyone else. It does great off road, I don't rock climb with it, but I will take it thru the mud and on Fire roads with NP at all. Plus it is cheaper that a 6, although not much resell value if you plan on selling it, which I don't plan on doing, I have 176k on it now and plan on putting another 176k on it.|

Daily driver/toy = 4.0
Toy only = 2.5
Both are good engines, but as stated, 2.5's suck ass on the road. Off road, either or. I don't care what anyone says, I've owned both and they are equal in low range.

I drove both, tested them multiple times, parts and upgrades arent really there for the 4 banger(engine wise)
the power was not bad but after buying a jeep on 35's and a 4.0 I still have more power than a 2.4 and don't have to worry about going up hills
I decided to get a loan for the extra and buy a 4.0 and I am very happy with it

|tmbrdr69||Jeeps originally came with nothing but 4 cylinders. And if power is what you are after I think that a 5.2L or 5.7L would be more appropriate. If your in California this will be a problem due to smog laws. Whatever you end up with if you hang around here long enough you will be able to build a capable offroad vehicle out of your Jeep. My point being Jeeps were not made for speed. They are the kind of vehicle that you can point at just about any kind of road no matter how torn up it is and go without worry. That being the case speed was sacrificed for things like torque.|

|TJ Wrangler||Well like everyone said 6 is great for everything but fuel economy. My 4 cylinder 5 spd TJ gets 21-22 mpg if i drive like a grandma. the 6 from what i heard get 15-16 mpg if your lucky. so it all depends on how often and what you'll use it for. The 4 is fast enough for 130 hp.|

|motokeen||In the automatics the 2.5 seems better than the stick in my opinion. And you must remember the old saying= theres no replacement for displacement. So the 6 will have more power.|

|Jerry Bransford||About the only time the 2.5L is equal to the 4.0L is in low-speed offroad work. For mud, snow, sand, highway, around town, etc., the 2.5L is a dog and the 4.0L would far superior. And surprisingly, not even the mpg is going to be different between them. All the 2.5L engine's potential for better mpg is negated by having to drive the 2.5L so much more aggressively to keep up with traffic.|

|kaycee83||Yea def 6. Although my 2.5 doesn't really bothered me. Hills are the only place i really noticed it, which is manageable. I just put 35's on it & it does surprisingly well, i actually didn't really notice that much of a power loss. I was suprised.|

|marc1kim||I've owned both. Love the 4.0. The 4 banger was slow (which I didn't mind) but if you plan on hardcore mods...you'll be having to deal with the weak D35 rear axle (which is open dif), and other things as well. IMO the 4 banger is good for moderate stuff, puck lift, some 31s, and a true track(or super 35) and hit the trails.|
