Lyngle Denis, if I may chime in. I have had my Jeep for only a short time. 2 months after I purchased it from a guy the motor went south on me and I spent $2200 getting a new engine, installed. I paid $8500 for this Jeep! So at that point now I have $10700 in this damn thing!!! The guy also put a new stereo in it just before I bought with remote. It was a no name brand but seemed to be fairly nice and worked well. A month down the road it went out and here I go replacing that, with a nice Kenwood head unit new amp, new 6x9 speakers and new 12inch Pioneer sub just to make the tunes acceptable to me! Done right? Wrong, next in very short order the freaking battery went out and so another $100 bucks for that. Keep in mind, this is all in a few short months after purchasing this thing. I have also had various electrical failures, headlights, fog lights, tail and running lights brake lights, gauge lights, gauge needle failures, and something drawing the new battery down after it sits for several days. I have fixed nearly all of these issues except for a couple which I haven't gotten to yet because I work about 70 hours a week you know? My wife hates this Jeep, Im sure because of the money it has cost me and seems to continue to cost me! But.......Having said all that, I Love my Jeep, and more importantly, I have a 2 year old daughter that runs outside when I get home from work just so she can sit in the thing and pretend she is driving it!!!!! She runs out yelling JEEP!!!!!!! JEEP DADDY JEEP!!!!!!!! i WANNA DRIVE JEEP!!!!!!!! My point is, how do you put a price on that???? Do I have too much money in the thing and still want to do more to it? Hell yes!! Am I gonna let my wife convince me to sell it even though she gripes about it all the time? HELL NO!! lol Im gonna hang on to this thing for quite a while. I have had too many cool vehicles over the years and gotten rid of them only to regret it EVERY TIME LATER! I would say Denis, if you don't REALLY need the money, if its not a situation where your family would starve unless you sell it then I would keep the thing, because I believe more than likely you will regret it and have to start over with another later anyway. Who knows, maybe your new child will one day soon run out to meet you screaming JEEP!!!!! JEEP DADDY, JEEP!!!!!!!!!! One word...........Priceless.

coledog2004 Keep the jeep get her a dodge grand Caravan problem sloved if you have kids I hate to say it but thats the best thing to get to haul them around lots of room and not doors to hit while you trying to load a kid. No way I would pay 40k for any car at all even for me dodge caravan loaded 30k new cars are way to expensive for whatbu get 50k for a 4x4 f150 just stupid

marshall1225 Hang on to it.

denisbaldwin After a month of hilarious offers, looks like I'm keeping it and continuing my build. Things with the kid have settled down and I'm worked out a good schedule with his time (and costs), so it will sit until either the right buyer comes or I move to a place more conducive to getting out and playing more often.
10-06-2013 08:00 PM
Norcal_Chris I would keep it. I cant see you getting anymore than 6k for it on a good day. And with how much you have spent it makes no sense.
10-04-2013 02:01 PM
Surfinglbi23 I already posted up how much I enjoyed the build thread. After reading everything, I thought I'd add another perspective. I had a baby about a year ago. Leading up to that, I sold off some of my stuff. Nothing too rare but a few motorcycles, things like that, an extra car. I think you need to put your family first. If your wife needs a bigger car, so be it. The neat thing about YJ's is that there are dozens and dozens for sale every day. You might not get exactly what you want but who knows where you are in 5 years? You could buy a project already done or buy another stocker and build it up again.

My only point is don't sweat it too much. Its not like its the only one out there. Put your family first as that's what is most important. Another Jeep will come along if you want it down the line. Best of luck whatever you do!

presto88 If it's paid for and it's that cheap to keep it around, I don't think you are going to regret keeping it for a while.

Unless you think you will be getting the Jeep out and driving it on a regular basis, you might want to put in some fresh fluids (motor oil, tranny, diffs) and some fuel stabilizer before you park it. Just a suggestion.

Good luck with the big changes coming your way! It's an exciting time in your life!

Duckquackers Good looking Jeep my friend and thank you for being 100% honest about it on your posting.

ddtt225 I feel you. I can only get to about 55MPH in mine too but im not sure why. not like I have a lift or anything. It just wont go that fast without streching the rpms past 2,500. we have some guys that we ride with that take there trail rigs and drive them. some are older some are newer models.

I mean, i know we drive antiques here and they ALL need fixing in some way or form. but I could never imagine selling mine to someone else after all the late night knuckle busting, cursing, and just all around good times that have been had in that rig since the mid 90's. I hope you get what you want out of it, but at the same time I hope your able to moth ball it and just hold it out until a couple years pass and then your son can see all the fun times that are to be had in it. thats what my dad did to me with my jeep and I hope im able to pass it down to my son (if were not flying around in cars by that time)
My two biggest hinderence are time and location. I'm 2 to 3 hours away from even mild trail riding. I don't have the means to trailer my rig, so I have to drive it to wherever I'm going and at a max speed of about 55MPH, that becomes an issue. Additionally, I'm still working 70+ hours/week, so even if I had a local place to go I'd probably not had time.

Looks like it will sit until I sell it.

Her $40k car? I tend to agree. That said, her currently car (a 2010 Mazda3) is way too small to carry the baby seat and still offer any kind of leg room for the driver/passenger. She is looking to go to a CX-9 so she has the room (and the storage room, as babies have a lot of accessories that have to go everywhere with them).

Either way, I'll figure it out somehow. The jeep stays until I get what I want out of it.

She's not a fan of anything used, so I'll find another way to work this until the Jeep sells (if it sells).

That's a pretty convincing argument to keep throwing more money at it to finish it

That's the asking price. I know I'll never get anywhere near what I put into it (and I even stated that in the ad), but I'm not giving it away. It costs me about $2/day to keep it insured, so it will sit until it sells.

That's what I've been doing. About twice a month, I drive it the 5 miles to work and back. I'll hold out to see if anyone is willing to bite. If not, it stays parked at work until I need it.

jcsuddarth I haven't sunk anywhere near that kind if money in mine, but I wouldn't get rid if it for anything right now. My little girl turned one today, going through teething and all the other reasons that babies don't like to sleep, and sometimes the jeep is the only thing to get her to sleep. We don't go get in my wife's maxima, we get in the bumpy clattering jeep and she is OUT. No matter the age, kids love a jeep. Just my personal experience though lol

OverkillYJ Man I have an 11 month old son, and there is no way I would ever even consider selling mine. Our Jeeps are very similar to what we have in them, and the overall setups. You will never get anything close to what it is actually worth, and if someone ever offers what you think it is worth you know you really dont want to sell it anyways.

I could never imagine my kid being like 9-10 years old or so and seeing pictures of all the time and money I spent on my Jeep, just to explain to him that I sold it. I will never get rid of it. If I get another vehicle to build I will stick it outside for years if I have to, but it will still never go to anyone unless it is my kid, or one of my brothers as a last resort. And then only because I love them.

brachilius DO NOT sell it! I sold my 91 in 2004. I got $5000 for it. That was not worth it. I was young and dumb. If I had to do it again, I would have kept it. I am way more into my new build at this point. You will never get back the blood and sweat you put into it. Plus, no one will appreciate the work more than you. Keep it.

After the feedback I've gotten both in response to the sale ad in calls and also from someone on a local facebook community that posted about it, it looks like I'll have the Jeep for a while. The general consensus has been that despite all the high end parts with receipts, my Jeep is only going to fetch a grand or so (at best). Thus, I'm just going to wait it out.

In the meantime, I'm probably going to try to find hard doors for it (to complete it), throw some cash into finishing the gauges and wiring and park it at my work in one of our storage locations. If the right buyer comes along, cool. If not, I'll just wait it out.

My thoughts exactly. It might sell, it might not. Someone might come up with a neat trade idea. I dunno. I know I'm definitely not giving it away either way.
