|FTNuke||I decided to quit on Dec. 30 (just to be different than New Years Resolution people) and I just went cold turkey. I know what you mean about feeling like your skin was crawling. Luckily I was on "standdown" in the Navy so I just sat at home for 3 days until the cravings passed. I never even left the house so it wasn't possible to get cigarettes. I took up jogging the next week and once I noticed how much easier it was to breathe I haven't even had a second thought about smoking, although every now and then I have a dream where I somehow start up accidently and then feel guilty when I wake up until I realize it was just a dream and I didn't really have a smoke. The thing that made it absolutely final for me was about a month after I quit I went on a few dates with a smoker, and I got to find out that it really was just disgusting to kiss a smoker. That alone will keep me from ever smoking again.|

I think most smokers don't realize how irritating smoke is to non-smokers until they try to quit and are surrounded by it. Yes, it was hard to put up with you sometimes but I know I can be hard to deal with myself too. I loved you before, and I love you even more now!

Congrats guys, I know it was tough, I had to put up with my wife while she was quitting. Also freed up more money...now I have more bills.

I would also like to send out a special THANK YOU to a very special person that is sleeping ATM. Thank you very much for putting up with my s%$# while I was quitting and dealing with what I smelled like when I was smoking.

x2, congrats. I also quit 2 months ago. 9 years of 2 1/2 packs of Marlboro red 100's and I just decided to quit cold turkey one day. I told doc I would do anything to be able to go outside again, he said quit drinking and smoking and exersise and buy LOTs of medicine, so i did.
If you really want to quit, cold turkey is the way. pills and patches just prolong the agony. cold turkey you are done in a week. Flavored toothpicks and a tredmil were my best friends.

Thanks everyone for all the support. I can honestly say that I have never quit at anything I've done until now. I put down the cancer sticks a couple of months ago and never looked back. I ended up using the patch to help curb the urge until the mental addiction wasn't as extreme. If I could give myself or anyone else out there trying to quit any advice it would be to get mad at the addiction and get stubborn. The urges will never just stop but they will slowly begin to fade. Besides the fact that food tastes much better and I can walk the dogs without gasping is good enough for me.
P.S. Yes, I had a few hissy fits that made me feel stupid after regaining my senses, but nothing was damaged except my own health and blood pressure. Addictions blow and smoking isn't cool.

when I quit I just quit no patch didnt work or losenges they didnt work I just got it in my head to quit and it took one week for the craving to mellow a little but I did have to keep busy to keep my mind off of it and dont drink youl want one even more
even though I dont drink any more stoped before I stoped drinking
just have to tuff it out and stick with it what ever you do

|rebelBullDawg325||i dont know about cigarettes, but i know that with snuff (dip) sunflower seeds helped alot. but they have just been the sensation of somethin in the mouth (it'd be similar to you chewin on straws)|

|kg4kpg||My wife quit this past fall. She used some new pill that took away the craving immediately and had a steady increase in dosage for 4 weeks then steady for 8 weeks. The she stopped taking them and is still not smoking. I can find out what it was if you want so you can ask your doctor. Good luck with it, it's so nice not smelling smoke in the house anymore. You can do it!|

I never noticed my sense of taste changing but my sense of smell really changed, even when I was smoking heavy I had a very good sense of smell but since I quit it's gotten amazing, I can smell somebody ahead of me on the freeway smoking.
My truck hasn't been smoked in in months and still, when ever it rains or I get in with a wet jacket the seats start reaking of stale smoke.
My boss is one of those every hair in the right place, never a spec of dirt on his clothes kinda guys so I wouldn't have expected him to "smell" the other day he walked up a little too close and the stench nearly made me gag. sadly I imagine I smelled worse and Amy had to put up with it for years.

I smoked two packs of Camels or Marlboro Reds for 16 years and only tried to quit twice. The first time I stopped for two years and started again. I smoked another three years and promised my wife that I would quit drinking and smoking when she got pregnant. Well, she became pregnant, and I quit both and haven't did either for 4 years now. For me, the secret was sunflower seeds, jolly rancher candies, and lifting weights The first time I quit, in two years I went from a skinny 180lbs to 235lbs. Its amazing how you can eat a cheesburger, after quitting, and taste all the different flavors The sunflower seeds keep you busy, and the weights will help with the anger waves This may sound stupid, but if I had a bad urge I'd look into the mirror and tell myself, if I couldn't beat this, then I was a p***y. It worked.

I was going nuts today, chewed up a few pencils and even had my skin feel like it was crawling. I have decided this thing isn't going to beat me ( I'm still stubborn as a mule) so I told everyone that has contact with me to steer clear unless it was an emergency.|

my bro got on wellbutren (sp) a couple years back and he quit, for a while, cold turkey. worked as long as he took it. however i don't think you are suppose to take it w/ booze , he didn't but got sucked back in.
I also have been trying to quit and the exercise thing does help

After going through it with Skeeter, I know how hard it is. I'm very proud of him for making it. I know it'll give him a lot more years to spend with the kids and me.
If one method doesn't work for you, don't give up, just try another method. I wish you the best of luck, Odhinn.

|rexmundi||Well after smoking for over 50 years I never thought I could quit. I tried the patch a couple of times and i would stat again after a while. I finally tried the gum and lozenges and they have helped me the most. Smoke free for over six months. Having a support person also helped. Just try anything and everything and you will find something that works and good luck. If you need someone to chat with e-mail anytime.|

No good advice, haven't found a one-size-fits-all cure. Best thing is to replace the bad habit with something good, like blu wrote (gym, exersize). Having a bottle of water always nearby and taking a sip now-&-again.
Bad part was I replace smoking with other bad habits, eating and chewing tobacco. Weight watchers got the eating under control and have tapered back on the chew quite a bit. Goal is to quit completely this year.
Chewing on straws or toothpicks are good ideas.

Chew straws, chew cinnamon sticks,, ask your Dr about wellbutrin.
I quit for a little over a year a few years ago but the cravings never went away, every day I wanted a cigerette and then one day I pulled into a little stop'n rob and before I knew it I had a cig half smoked, didn't even remember buying the pack.
About 3 or 4 months ago my doc prescribed wellbutrin and the cravings just about disappeared, I still have problems once in awhile but not nearly as bad as it was.
Good luck, quitting smoking is without doubt the hardest thing I've ever done.

|bluvikng||When I quit, I started a new habbit. I started jogging, or walking everyday........that seemed to really help, as at first, it was hard to breath. That gave me the determination, to stop smoking for good. I even started tasting my food again. I know you stated that you already have problems with your knees, so this may not work for you. Join a gym, and start working out, it will do wonders for your confidence, and helping you to regain some lung power. It is also much cheaper than smoking, and much better for you. You could even start swimming, indoors, and that will have great benefits. Good luck, and great choice. Another method, is of course the patch, but don't know how well they work.|
