there are lots of threads on gearing. There are even some gearing charts in the Forum for auto and manual trans set ups that will chart out your expected RPMs. Consider the cost of re-gearing, which is between 1000 and 2200 depending on new or used, if you need new carriers (which you do to go from 3.21 to 4.56) and who does the work. You want to get it right.
Take where you live and how you drive into consideration. Where I live 4.56 is perfect for 33s, and I would even go a little bigger if I didnt' tow. Hilldweller would recommend 4.88 gears based on where he drives.

4.56 and 33s
4.88 and 35s

...and most important, how much can I afford to get done in round 1?

Total is:

Gears, lockers
3.5" RE life
Wheels, tires
Thanks for letting me know. Take it easy.

If you don't mind me asking...Who is going to install your gears? I am looking for someone also. thanks

Tim_09_X As long as there is another gearing thread.... I have some questions too I am a newbie and have an X with the 3.73 gears. I will be putting the RC 2.5" spring lift and 285/70R17 KM2's on shortly. I want to change the gearing to 4.10s. I see a lot of people selling used front and rear sets for around $100. But most of them are for D 44's and im guessing that they wont work in my front 30. I was just wondering if you guys could let me know your thoughts on this... that would be great. What else do I need to do this? Is this even a good idea? Im sorry and hope I didnt sound too much like a tool.... Merry Christmas

brodydez I actually was in the same boat as you were and I went with a 6" lift and the 35's and 3:21 gears and I am still doing it until I can afford to put in 4:88s. Its been about a year and probably will be another 6 months or so until I can save up the cash to put in 4:88s.
While it doesn't suck the life out of the V6, it does slow it down a bit. Freeway driving and city driving is fine, but my mpg is about 14. Not sure if the new gears will help that out or not. It does have less power for sure then when it was stock, but I have been driving it so long now I don't feel the difference.

Another gear question ...but I can't seem to find the answer anywhere

I've asked a couple gear questions in the past, and I appreciate all of your responses. I'm now at the moment of decision! I'm on the fence between 4.56 and 4.88 (my Jeep profile is pretty complete for additional info). I want 4.88 and 35" tires, but I'm concerned about one thing. I drive a lot! City, highway, and as much off road as I can ...but my JK is my DD. Due to money, it's going to be 6-8 months between gears and new tires. I know running 3.21s with a lift and 35"ers will suck the life out of my V6. What quirks issues should I expect if I'm running 4.88s and stock 32" tires?

This is why I'm considering 4.56 and 33" tires. But if there's no major issues running 4.88s and 32" tires for an extended period of time (and I drive a lot) ...then I'll do what I want to do.

Any advice/personal experience would be greatly appreciated.
