If the frame and the tub are decent not a bad deal.
If you really want to build a jeep do yourself a favor and start with a 4.0
You will wish you did later. The 2.5's suck and are annoying as hell.
Is it a Colt Ar-15? That makes a difference too.

|Lancem||For sure check the frame, around the rear shackle mount points, the whole lower rear section of the frame, they rot out there and you are in big $. Floors are always a rot point if it has carpet in it, but for a grand you aren't doing too bad if it's in pretty good shape.|

|NAVYCHIEF||trade for the ar-15,sell the hard top and fix the tranny. check frame,shackles,shock mounts and motor mounts for excessive rust. check under the hood and look at the wiring for a hack job re-wire.|

noob with pre-purchase questions
im looking into buying (actually trading for) a 95 yj with 115000 miles. its a black 4cyl 5 spd.
i checked it out the other night and it does have a couple issues. most importantly it seems that the syncros are shot. it will not downshift without rev matching ( double clutching). i have talked to my transmission guy and he says if that is what it is its about a $600 fix.
the emergency brake is aparently not functioning. its ziptied up. the owner says when he bought it it was like that and the guy told him "DONT PUT IT DOWN!"...wtf?
it does run and drive pretty well. oil pressure holds right about 40. it rides hard but cmon its a jeep. the steering concerned me. it seems to jut left and right. im sure if i tore it apart i could find a host of bushings and what not to replace that might fix that.
it does have a couple rust spots that i saw. ( i eye banged this thing with a maglite at night at a gas station) one on the passengers rocker? (correct term?) and some on both sides of the rear of the cab. both rocker panels? have been diamond plated and the rust is completed hidden, but i asked and he admitted. the frame, floor boards, and majority of the underbody seem in good shape.
is there anything good about this thing? of course. first the price. we have negociated to around $1000 or trade for a cherry ar-15. it has new 31x10.5 tires on 17" ar rims. new shocks (owner says rough country). everything works. gauges, 4wd hi and lo, windows, wipers, hi beams, glove box. it comes with a hard and a soft top.
now i know if i buy this thing ill be dumping a grand into it to make it road worthy. another grand to make it offroad worthy. probably another 500 to make it look nice. im fine with that. what im asking all of you is what should i be looking for when i go back during the day and have it up on a jack? what commonly goes wrong? what did you wish you had checked when you bought one? HELP A NOOB OUT.
