Happy JK IMO a matching spare with nice wheels and tire combo are asking to be stolen, a basic combo that preferably is the same diameter, just for function is the way to go. Even if it is a smaller diameter and doesn't match the backspacing, at least you have something. This can avoid spending cash on a 5th tire and a carrier, if that looks ugly to you, buy a tire cover.

Tweak I run 37's and couldnt justify spending another $500 when I have the DT warranty and friends with 37" spares. I'm in Texas where there is a DT on every corner.

I have had my spare off, and the TPMS sensors did not engage. I think that as long as a sensor with the correct signal is with in range and registering a lower than acceptable level, it will set off the light. If you remove one signal from the system, it does not register a lack of signal as a fault.

I have had one flat this season, and it was able to be patched. That being said, I would not go anywhere profound without a spare.

MI JeepSkate im pretty sure the TPMS light will engage once the spare is removed. its a continuous working system, relying on all 5 i do believe.

OffRoadWarrior I recently put a 1" gash straight through my tread. A bunch of rope plugs probably would have worked but I wasn't interested to find out. Liking to be prepared, I'd never leave home without a spare and basic tools. Plugs won't fix a blowout.

...and about popping a bead. It's pretty easy to reseat a tire with a ratcheting strap.

spinlock The wide tires on narrow rims will reduce the probability of unseating the bead and damaging the wheel when you air down but not damaging the sidewalls. Always carry a spare off road.

There is another thread where someone is going on an overland adventure with a trailer carrying 3 additional spares ( total 4).

I was saying that no one in the group minds/complanes one bit about having to go fetch a part for someone else. If they did they wouldn't be invited back.

Are you implying that everyone who is on any trail in a jeep without a spare tire is unprepared? Especially on trails less then a few miles long.

And yes I have actually taken everything but fire extinguishers and first aid kits out to run a few trails before. But it was for personal safety not to save weight.

We NEVER leave anyone on the trail not even strangers we come upon who are stranded. Karma is a bitch (next time it will be you stranded on the trail).

But we don't go out with people/vehicles that are unprepared.

I guess it all depends on the group and how you fit into it. Everyone in my group is expected to go out of the way and do something like go back to camp to get a tire at some point. Simply because of the fact that it very well might be you needing a tire, axle, rod end, PS pump or driveshaft from camp next.

I see what you are saying though.

dawhitesJKU I agree with the majority of running a spare. You could also get a used spare with the same size just for insurance purposes. I tore up my sidewall beyond repair and I'm happy I purchased a 5th.

WatchThis! I guess I am the opposite from everyone. I allways have a spare on the highway and wouldnt dream of driving around without one, but drop it when hitting hard/extreme trails. I do it for clearance and to have less weight hanging off the tail of my rig. If and when one of us gets a flat we just send someone after a spare.

If just easing around on 3's or 4's at a club ride or charity event I just leave the spare on the jeep.

marslim Agreed I'll never understand why someone wouldn't run a spare... On road or especially off!! It makes no sense and can leave you stranded, pay the extra and get the carrier

ElectricJay I have had 2 punctures this year that a plug or patch would not fix. The spare got me home safely both times. I can change a spare quicker than fixing a patch.

Raiderfan001 Offroad out in the middle of nowhere you'd be an idiot to not have a spare. When I got my 35s and before I got my bumper/tire carrier I strapped my spare vertically to the roll bar behind the driver's seat.

scuba_steve I have had 4 flats in the last 3 years...and 3 were beyond repair. I know some folks only carry one when they off-road, but I don't drive to the grocery store without one.

hooper I only wheel with people that have a spare on their rig. It is hard to find a small puncture on a muddy/dirty tire. You can fix a shredded tire on the road or trails with a patch/plug kit. Yes, you need a spare.

sparky Since your tires are getting a lot more abuse running trails than on the street, why would you not carry one?

Tire patchs are only for punctures not ripped sidewalls.

Hi guys, so I've just taken possession of my Billet 2014 JKUR and I'm getting together my lift and other goodies and when looking at tire carrier rear bumpers or a TF hinge, it occurred to me.. do I really need a spare?

I mean, wouldn't having a tire patch kit and on board air be all that's needed?

Just out of curiosity, how many have popped a bead while wheeling and would have been stuck without having their spare?


I'm planning on running 35x12x17 BFG KM2's on factory Moab wheels. The wheels are 7.5" wide (I'll be running 1.75" Spidertrax spacers). My understanding is wider tires on narrower rims decreases the chance of a bead break.

Am I throwing money away to be considering a tire carrier and spare or should I get myself a PSC tramp stamp and call'r done? (Jeep JK Tailgate Protection | JK Tailgate Armor | JK Tramp Stamp | Poison Spyder Customs)

I'd like to hear opinions on both sides of the issue.. If you're running "spare-less" I'd like to hear your reasoning and if you've ever been stuck without your spare.
