I had to make the tough decision to put down my Alabama (Al'ie Girl) in 2001. She was a brindle coated GoldenX?--we said she was Heinz 57 or the U.N. collection for her breed.
She was a partner in crime for 12 great years, and she taught me more than I ever taught her. And she could hunt out of the box (I'm no trainer/handler). I still laugh about how she bumped up more pheasants than my buddy's trained GSP! Both my late father and my son hunted over her. We got a lot of birds over that old girl.
I miss her terribly still. After we had to put her down (some sort of cancer?) I found a piece by Jim Willis that pretty well sums up my feelings:
I Loved You Best
So this is where we part, My Friend,
and you'll run on, around the bend,
gone from sight, but not from mind,
new pleasures there you'll surely find.
I will go on, I'll find the strength,
life measures quality, not its length.
One long embrace before you leave,
share one last look, before I grieve.
There are others, that much is true,
but they be they, and they aren't you.
And I, fair, impartial, or so I thought,
will remember well all you've taught.
Your place I'll hold, you will be missed,
the fur I stroked, the nose I kissed.
And as you journey to your final rest,
take with you this...I loved you best.

I lost my first Boykin Spaniel , Harbour Girl, at 12 yes old.She had never shown interest in being around cars when they were running. One night I stopped briefly in driveway---when I headed for the garage she had her head under the front wheel.I spent $3000 on test trying to decide what to do.When the surgeon said she didn't have any quality life left that decided for me.I now have a 6 yr old Boykin Spaniel,Stormy Harbour, for my pal. When I hurt I pick up a picture of Harbour Girl that says "My Forever Friend"----I'll remember you forever, and how much you meant to me. So don't be sad or even grieve, it was just my time to leave.

Had to put my saint bernard down in April - one of the toughest decisions I ever had to make and still feel selfish that I did it, even though her quality of life was gone. She had to get picked up from laying down and I was the only one that she'd let do that. Then she'd fall about a dozen times during her walks at the end. I couldn't do it anymore.
It still hurts, but at least I can look at pictures now and laugh...
And all of a sudden my 2 year old starts asking where she is this week...

Wow! Jeepers sure love dachshunds.
We say we don't want another one but then a match just falls in your lap. I lost my GSD, Zeus, in 2007 when he was 11. He'll always be in my thoughts. His little buddy, Ceaser, is my 14yo Mini-Dachshund. I think he's nearing his end but then other days he is great. Earlier this year we adopted another GSD, Jasmine, after saying we wouldn't. It just happened. Both she and Ceaser get along well.
I'd say take your time, meet more dogs, maybe you'll find the right match. You'll never forget Molly, as you shouldn't. Maybe she'll send you a match one offense days.

My heart breaks. I had to give shared custody of Henry (my Goldendoodle) in a divorce that finalized last week...
He's amongst the living, and it still brings me to tears

I feel your pain brother. We lost our dog of 15 years just two days ago. It's absolutely heartbreaking. He's all I think about. I just try to find things to do to keep my mine occupied.

It's tough, and eventually you will get over the sadness and you'll be able to just talk about fond memories. When we lost our first family dog, Georgia, my mom was really upset for a long time. It took her years until she was able to get some more dogs. She loves her new ones, but there are still so many times that we reminisce about Georgia and talk about how different she was from her new ones.
I'm sorry to hear about your loss. When I worked in a veterinary hospital, part of our grief counseling was to get people to tell us funny stories about their pet. Maybe that would help a little?
