usa1 Thanks for all the advice. It turns out the guys sold it yesterday for $7,600. The search continues.

spec miata Keep shopping. I have been looking for a TJ for the past 6 months and finally found one last week in KC for $2000. it was on CL. Its a 6cyl, 5 spd, new soft top with a good radio and sound bar. Not a scrach or dent on it. It needed a clutch. The guy selling it had over 70 calls in one day. I just happened to be the first one to show up with the money after it was listed. The chase of a good deal is half the fun. Good luck!

Jeepzcb09 I think you could get it cheaper

scoobasteve The thing that I found most interesting when I was looking for my Jeep was the HUGE price differential from one jeep to another. You could look at identical Jeeps and one guy would be asking 6k and the guy next door would be asking 8k for a Jeep with the same specs. My advice to you is not to be in a Rush. I must have looked at a dozen jeeps or so before picking up my '99 Sahara. Loaded with all the options, 103k miles, both tops and in very nice shape for $5,800. That being said I knew it needed a new header (typical cracking) and front brakes. Keep an eye out, the right deal will come along.

Regarding the Jeep being practical, I don't think so as ours is a third vehicle. The trunk is small, bad gas mileage, and they are easy to be broken into. That being said they are a hell of a good time to drive! One last thing...I can't image squeezing 3 kids in the back seat.

02 Apex I wouldn't put three kids in the back of a Jeep; it's noisy enough with 2. My two girls are always fighting about whom has more room; ugh. Also, scant room for any stuff, unless it goes on a rack. Price seems kind of high (I paid $7K for my '02 Apex w/HT, auto and 89K miles, last March). That said, pricing has been climbing as people get turned down for new car loans and seek out good used vehicles. Also, prices vary widely, by region. Nice-looking rig, though. FInd out what it's got and and check it against New Cars, Used Cars, Blue Book Values & Car Prices - Kelley Blue Book.

Good luck.

TurboTony84 Nice looking jeep. Just one thing to point out. its not a V-6! its an I-6! it kills me when ppl say stuff like that. don't mean to complain, but that really annoying. the only wrangler with the V-6 are the JK's

terrible2 Definitely not a family car, get a cherokee or commander. Your family might fit, but not all their shit.

burton160w It looks very clean, I love the red color. Just check all over from rust/salt damage, since it is in New England. Price-wise, I would say it is a bit much. Mileage is okay, but I paid $6k for my similarly spec'd Wrangler. The bonus is both a hardtop + softop, but don't make that a deal breaker if you look elsewhere.

However, realistically, this is not a family car. Don't think of adding a third lap belt. Don't think that it has a smooth comfortable ride for long family outings. For a family, they make a fun second/project/weekend car, but it's not something that you're going to want to depend on to lug the kids around in constantly.

csamn2007 Its a fair price, looks pretty clean. I would search the forum fast, the "what should i look for" has been answered a lot. I think i might make a write up on it.

Geoff@Bestop You can get replacement rear seats that have headrests. Here's the one we sell:

motoguy450r i don't think this is a family vehicle and a third belt was not quit what they had in mind when they just put 2 in.it would be hard to get 3 kids any age in the back seat. make sure to check underneath for leaks, always look inside the framerails, over transmission, and all those tight spots for mud etc. unless they get it sand blasted or steam cleaned you can always find caked mud somewhere. check the under the seats if it has been submerged you will see rust on the mounts (or maybe they just leave the top of it), pull the carpet back and check the tub. take the glove box out and check the fuse terminals for corrosion. just a few things too look for. looks good though and jeeps are how much you wanna spend kinda vehicles. good luck.

Need advice on a potential Wrangler purchase...

This is my first post here and I'm considering buying a Wrangler. This one in town looks pretty good: 1999 Jeep Wrangler Sport 4X4

I saw it in person the other day, but did not test drive it since it was late/dark and extremely cold with horrible road conditions and my wife and kids were with me. It appeared to be in very good condition with no rust or visible damage.

Some questions for the group here.
  1. Do you guys think the asking price it reasonable?
  2. What items should I specifically look out for on this year?
  3. During a test drive, what a some things I should be sure to check?
A couple of general questions about TJ Wranglers.
  1. My wife really does not like the lack head rests in the rear. Is is possible to add these?
  2. I have three small kids (7, 9, and 11) that look like they could fit in the rear. Is is possible to add a third lap belt in a pinch?
Thanks in advance for any advice!

Mark
