|Bskank||Mine started ticking a few months ago with louder faster ticks at higher RPM. I knew it was exhaust related and checked the flange bolts. They were a little loose, at two turns, I tightened them up and the tick went away. Yes check the flange bolts since you recently messed with them, something easy to try.|

The jeep seems to run fine. I'm just concerned that it's something besides a "lifter tick" since it doesn't only happen at start up or until it warms up. I can drive it for 30 minutes non stop and it will still "tick" off and on. The sounds varies in loudness, from very slight to more noticeable, to quiet as a mouse. The tempo of the tick increases with rpm. So.....does it sound like the exact symptoms of a lifter tick?
Here's a question: Could it be exhaust leak related? I'm just reaching for straws here. I'm trying to deduce possibilities based on things that have been done or changed since I bought the Jeep last October. As previously stated, I replaced the exhaust system from the down pipe back in February of this year and I'm wondering if I tightened the flanges to the exhaust manifold tight enough. Possibility or not??

|Junky_One||If it is the opda you can wipe out your cam. It will eventually start running rough after those teeth get eaten up. Deffinetly not something to ignore.|

|gweezey||Mine does the same thing, it's the gear shaft connected to the cam sensor. If it runs fine ignore it otherwise change the cam sensor. (Located just forward if the oil filter) put your hand on it with the engine running, bet money that's the problem.|

My sons will have a noisy lifter occasionally on startup too. Very seldom that it happens

|SurfKaster||Sounds like a noisy lifter, especially with cold starts. The manifold issue was more prone to early model TJs.|

|Junky_One||Spray with wd 40, in the dark. use a flashlight, if there's a crack in the manifold you can see it. It could also be the CPS gears clicking. More known in the 05 06 4.0s when they changed opda set up.|

Still looking for any additional help or ideas. The ticking I'm experiencing seems to be more than what most describe when they're talking about lifters. Like I stated in my original post above, my tick happens more than just at start up. I have checked the coil rail for good connection on all 6 plugs. In addition, I changed my oil yesterday morning and went with conventional instead of synthetic....I even added a half a quart of marvels to it.
Any more suggestions or ideas?? Both of my exhaust manifolds seem okay...but how can you really check them without removing?

|vwlos||I too replaced my plugs this past weekend. I'll double check the connection, but I don't think that's the issue...only because the tick was present before I changed the plugs & I "think" I got all 6 connected good when I replaced them...although I never really heard any of them "click" on.|

|justin-branam||Random possibility, check to make sure the ignition rail is properly seated on all of the spark plugs. I replaced my plugs this weekend, and thought I got them all on right. Heard a clicking when I started it up that increased with rpms. Wasn't consistent though. Would click a few times, then stop for a few seconds, then start clicking again. I looked under the hood and saw the spark all the way in the back wasn't seated right and it was arcing. Just an off the wall thought.|

|Ljcrawler05||You know whats funny is I have a very similar tick if not the same one... I changed my oil and used mobil 1 synthetic with a mopar filter and sure enough the ticking started. It does it on startup and will last anywhere from 30 secs to 5 mins of running/driving|

Annoying ticking from engine compartment
I'm having an intermittent ticking coming from somewhere in the engine compartment on my 04 Rubicon that increases with the RPM. The ticking seems to happen about 75% of the time at start-up and varies in the time that it lasts. In addition to it happening at start-up, it also seems to happen randomly at other times during my commute. I'm current using 10w30 Mobile1 synthetic oil. Sitting at around 75K miles.
When I purchased the Jeep a year ago next month, the previous owner was running Royal Purple oil in it. My first assumption is that it's associated with the valve train...noisy lifter, etc..
Do you guys have any other thoughts on what it could be or suggestions on how to remedy it?
