x2 on the mini tubing cutter. Cheap and works on all sorts of lines making a nice, clean cut.

Or a regular old tubing cutter would work.
You can get a mini for less then 10 bucks.

|retiredMarine||Any suggestions on what to use to cut the metal hard line? I'm replacing the radiator and the rubber hoses need replacing too but one of them is crimped on.|

|Rubicon2||Hmmm when I installed my temp sensor for my Trans temp gauge I cut the steel line that comes out right at the bottom of the radiator and only a few drips came out. Installed it checked the fluid level and it has been fine for the past 25,000 miles. I don't know why but fluid never gushed out. The cooler for the radiator is doing what it is supposed to.|

|jblaznik||Hey Jerry, It's Jerry from FL. I have the same problem with a tranny hose leak on my 97 TJ. What would be the damage with just letting both drain empty so that I can remove hose and clamps to get the right replacement size(s)?|

|Jerry Bransford||Uh, the ATF is gonna gush out if you're not careful. So clamp the hose so the cooler doesn't drain, & cut it in half on the other side of the clamp (vise grip works fine). Then put your thumb over the hard line as much as you can while you slip the new line on & then quick pull the old hose off the radiator & slip the new one on. ATF is some pretty sick messy stuff, ya oughta see my garage floor (outdoor carpeting on it) from the several "accidents" I've had involving ATF.|

|Joel S||Thanks Jerry for the info! I can see that the hose is held on with clamps on both sides. Looks easy enough. I heard the hose is difficult to get off where it meets the metal line. How much fluid comes out when you take it off? I was going to change my gasket and TF filter at the same time probably.|

|Jerry Bransford||Your Jeep shop is full of it. I replaced that short piece of hose for $3-4 and it took me 15-20 minutes from start to finish. In my garage, with no special tools other than a knife to cut the old hose off the hard line. I slipped the new piece of hydraulic transmission hose over the hard line, secured it with the same type of clamp that holds the other end of the hose to the radiator ports and that was that.|

Yes it is the short piece of rubber hose that is soaked in AT fluid. I took it to a local Jeep shop here and he said you can't just change the rubber you have to replace the entire line. He quoted $230 with parts and labor. From what I am reading here it is possible to just change the rubber part. Does this part look like it would be of any help?

|Jerry Bransford||Exactly what is leaking? The lines themselves won't leak, but the fittings that hold them can. A leaking line like that doesn't often need to be replaced, just find what is leaking & fix that specific part. Maybe you just need to replace that short piece of rubber hose that goes between the hard line & the radiator fittings?|

|Joel S||I am going to do the same thing on mine then, a 99 TJ. I was quoted $230 to change the entire line. I need to change the filter and gasket on the pan too. I have a pretty good drip from around there. I have not taken off the cover to see yet. If I just change the fluid that comes out with the pan will that be enough to remove the air that might get in? Anyone have a link for changing all of the fluid? Thanks.|

mine was leaking cost 28 bucks at napa for the right fitting and hose no more leak dealer wanted 187.00 for the complete set..

Get some made at Napa. I'm going to be doing the same soon. I've had a friend do this same thing. Niether of them are high pressure lines so making new ones is no issue, I've gotten this answer from both my mechanic friends and dealers. (Mine is a '97 and I'm not positive on the newer 4spd transmissions - might want to check on that first if you have the 4spd).
Take off the lines, cut just behind the crimp and take it down to Napa asking them to install some transmission fluid line in the length you need. They should be able to flare the ends, cut the line and then crimp it on. If Napa won't do it, take it to a tractor or hydraulic supply place.

Auto Transmission oil cooler lines
My lines that go to my radiator is leaking some fluid. The radiator is new, but the lines look like the original lines. The OEM lines cost alot, so is there another solution to replacing them with aftermarket ones? Thanks.
