|Mentalbill||WOW? EFI. I spent a lot of time reading and wrenching. I THINK that I have found my problem to be.... fuel mixture screws.... they were 2 3/4 turns out. They are now just 2. Went through a tank and a half. So far so good.|

|yjkid95||sounds like a big headache at that point personally i would give up and swap the motor|
|02-05-2010 10:54 PM|
hey guys - think i have a leak near or around my choke still though - the starting fluid around there sometimes revs high - fixed a problem though -
found that a cap blew off of the valve where the brake booster is connected - not the carb but below it - there is one facing the front of the jeep - should that be connected to anything?
anyway- i found my jeep idles betterr ( still can't get it to idle less than 900-1000...
when the pcvs on my v-cover are both open and the port in my carb is capped - it runs better that way - don't ask me why - still thrusting a little little bit in some spots.. thats why i think i have a leak - but idles find - just a little high..
so...what do you guys think..
|02-05-2010 06:11 PM|
right on man - not doing the nutter - didn't really plan on it - i am gojgn to do one thing though - i forgot - when i went to hawaii to run the marathon, i picked up a tune up kit ( since shipping was paid for my continental haha) and the rotor i got - didn't fit - so im going to replace that - i remember looking at it thinking - " this contact looks a little used" - so im going to get one today - and hopfully thats it -
the push pull happens like a dead spot in the throttle.. if i vibrate the pedal it works right through it and i feel the power... big time - but if i go slow and accelerate it skips a little . just plugged all of my CTO ports and cleaned the carb a little - new rotor on the way - hopfully that works - thanks guys..
feel free to call me - i can help a little now - haha.. 671 777 6365

|outland||DO NOT UNDO THE NUTTER BYPASS !!!!!! second that Not too sure if any problems would cause surge in speed but, it's a cheap and easy test to see if everything is kosher there. Perhaps you need to drain your fuel and check the components in your fuel tank? Not much left to check pertaining to the fuel system after that. no smoking thu............|
|02-04-2010 08:52 PM|
I'm back Kyle and it looks like you have had some good help while i was gone , but no was has yelled really loud NO DO NOT UNDO THE NUTTER BYPASS !!!!!!
Talk to ya later buddy.
|02-04-2010 02:35 PM|
no test yet, but put a full tank of gas in there, some seafoam fuel cleaner - and dry gass... oh , did i mention hook back upt he timing advance -
still a little little hesitation - but its breaking through it - probably because it was sitting for about 3-4 months - anyway- bought some carb cleaner as well but im just going to wait before i start fixing other problems -
thanks guys for all your help .. ill be back on here everyday - helping others when i can- and probably going to need more help soon..
by the way- does anybody need a timing chain and sprocket set - with gaskets and rear main seal?
ill ship it to you for cheap - bought it and don't need it -
|02-03-2010 05:37 PM|
thanks man - awesome post -
will that cause my thrusting forward and backwards during some points in accelerations - its not really popping anymore - set to 8 degress probabl a fuel problem
but - ill do the test man - thanks!

|outland||blk soot is a sign of a blown head gasket but, if you pulled each plug off one at a time and the engine faultered then all you pistons are firing. A compression tester can be bought at a parts store for around 25 bucks. pull the ignition wire off the cap, pull plug wires off and number them don't get them mixed up, remove plugs, screw in tester to plug hole one and have someone turn the engine over at least 7 times your average psi should be around 120 to 150 for a 4.0L-4.2L 155 to 185 for 2.5L. a low psi on first turn over and it does not build up means a leaking valve or a blown head gasket. low psi followed by slow increase means worn piston rings. blown gasket or leaking valves will give you the blk soot. If your psi's are higher than normal than your combustion chambers are full of carbon. if you do test, post your results.|

alright guys - limited on time here but...
got a new distributor...
no more stuttering during idle.. none - but during the drive
had some hesitation - only during some spots - mostly when i slam on the gas - and only sometimes - so im thinking bad gas - bad idle mix screws... ill adjust them -
but other than that - timing stayed at 8degrees without jumping at all -
still a little pull and push while driving though -
Carb cleaner and dry gas?
it just acts like its flooding out a little
other than that - im happy i can drive it without hurting myself - safety inspection tomorrow ( 25 dollars tomorrow i love guam )

|anklenawer||ah man - i just swapped out my old weber for my mc2100... rebuilt by scott... i will clean them though - pretty easy job..|

|Fweaky||Before I booted my Carter off my first CJ years ago when I had a similar problem. I swapped carbs and cured it. I ran across this article years later and believe my problem was related to the venturi problem listed in this link. Its cheap to try and may help some of the old carters. Easy Fix for Jeep 258 Carter BBD Idle Problem|

we got the timing light on it - i wasn't here but my good friend took care and checked it out .. they put it on 8degrees.. and then - without moviing the dist. it was moving up and down - all the way to 14 - 5 edgress.. its not staying at a solid degree - the timing is fluctuating - !!!
i don't know what that means.. im thinking timing chain -but at least we got some new stuff to go off of...
there has to be someone out there who knows whats this means - my main man scott howard has been selfishly enjoying himself in his lakehouse . ( haha enjoy it scott)
but - all in all - respond ill spend 500 bones tonight to get this working right if i know it will fix it -
maybe a new dist?
its already nuttered.. maybe undo the nutter?
help help help - i have faith this info will lead to my immediate solving..
thanks guys -
|02-01-2010 08:29 PM|
prety much in sthe same boat as carly there...
don't know how to do a compression test.. nor do i have the dough...
black soot..not that i really notice - inotice a pretty good burning gas smell around the jeep when its warm but - hell .. its carburated man...
um.. the guy never came by with the timing light yesterday - so after that.. a buddy is going to look at it tomorrow - im checking the dist. today and seing if there is play - from the rotor ( not rotational.. or in and out - just left ride side to side)
thats what my buddy said - make sure the dist. is in good order and thre isn't play in it..
other than that - lost...
thanks for the help though - keep it comming!

b.) i did ceck the plug wires and the RPMs did go down. (i did it a few months back so i'm not sure of the exact results, all i remember is that everything seemed ok).
c.) black soot? maybe. it is 20 years old so at this point it may be from anything. but yes the very tip of my exhaust is black.
i've done the MC2100 swap (twice), nuttered it, replaced: PCV, breather (fram), coil, plugs, wires, distributor cap, rotor.
|02-01-2010 05:53 PM|
|outland||I'm going to ask this instead of going back thru all hundred posts.......Did you run a compression test? did you pull each spark plug wire off one at a time to see if the engine faulters or not? do you have blk soot build up in your exhaust pipe?|

Will do man. I appreciate it. But just from looking at the offers on craigslist it would be wise to sell this HEEP here in Guam. Where I can get more money for it. An buy a jeep there. I don't know man. I'm just so mad. Three choices
money/ fix it myself wait for friends and forum
money / auto mechanic. May not work
sell it. Make lose about 300 bones and have money for a jeep in Hawaii.
I need a cure for this guy. I love this jeep!!! Damnit
hey man. My number is 671 777 6365
call me if you get ajything or want to talk about what we have done and tried
|02-01-2010 01:54 AM|
i can't figure out the choke housing on this new carb i got from the carb man on eBay. it seems to get stuck at 2K RPM. don't know if there's a setting to tune it down, after it fully warms up it's good at 800RPM idle in gear.
keep me posted on your findings and i'll do the same.
|02-01-2010 01:36 AM|
checked vacuums and will check timing tonight - i know not a lot of people are on here checking - but sadly - i got a dude who pulled over when i was working on it and offered me 4000 for my jeep - i bought it for that much - spent 300 on parts and stuff - got PISSED off and frustrated - but most of all - learned a lot - if he calls me - its sold...
it may be a sin - but right now i don't have the resources ( knowledge) to fix this and i just am fed up with it... not going to dump money into a mechanic for somthing that MAY work...
thanks - kyle
anyone selling a jeep in hawaii? hahah
|01-31-2010 05:34 AM|
alright - so i made a list of stuff to start working on
first - check timing - if no good....
1- ensure hoses are connected where they aught to go -
- if that doesn't work - plug CTO ports and just run timing advance and pcv - plug all others -
2 - is the EGR working when its hooked up? - if not - unplug and cap - take off EGR and plate it up
3 - check accelerator pump wear and tear in carb, check on rpelacement ( not sure if scott replaced it when he did a rebuild of it .. thanks again scott)
4 - check for short on dist. cap
thats all i got so far - anything else - could a air hose unplugged/ open really cause this warm idle problem - and popping/caughing while driving?
does it sound like a timing chain being loose? i got all the parts and gaskets..
keep the posts commin' guys - finally got it running and pretty drivable - need some more to keep it purring, and i know its going to be something stupid -
|01-30-2010 06:18 PM|
alright- did alot more reading, and my EGR has a nipple on it, but theres no opening - i know what port it whoudl go to on the CTO but i plugged mine because the EGR has the metal nipple haha - so i don't think that a hose going to it will do any good, but if its not working ( i dont' care about emissions here on guam) can i take it out to elimiate a leak if there is one?
also - i seen my dist. adv. should be T'ed with the port vacume from my CTO ( actually two holes in the CTO) so i will have to do that - and i am going to rearrage my PCV system- ill take a picture and show you guys what i got hopefully it turns out ok.. i really don't want to put this into the shop...and i really need a car
also - gotta fix the headlights when i bought them they worked - gotta do some tracing..

|01-30-2010 02:38 AM|
sorry to say = i adjusted it - turned all the way in and backed 1.5 out ( both of course) and it was alright - tuned it so it ran best - but still hard sputter - and the longer i was out there... the worse it idled.. i give it gas - and it responds great. fucking makes me mad - the guy didn't ever bring over the timing light .. he got busy - so not sure whats next - im looking for a auto hobby shop thats decently cheap around here - because after monday after my buddy looks at it - if he can't get it running good.. its going in the shop...
i hate putting money into this for labor when i can do it...but i don't know what to do...
