x2 on finding a rubicon tj or lj,
if you can afford one you will not regret it, and it will save you any upgrades you want in the future(lockers,gears,D44 axle)

|debruins||^ disagree^ i have a 97 and have not run into any problems at all, there are only minor differences in the body shape, and any mod that most people do that is different for a 97 any company will carry.|

|blackjeep51||Find an affordale '98 to '06 Rubicon. Many thousands of neede upgrades stock (Dana 44 axles, cv style driveshaft in rear, lockers, 4.0 low range) I say '98 not '97 (I have a '97) since there are a lot of after market parts that are different and sometimes not available for the '97.|

|debruins||It all depends on what your plans are. If you plan to just mildly offroad it and not modify it much and daily drive it, then the new Jk would be better. If you plan to go off road a good amount i would recommend finding a 97-06 (TJ) rubicon that has not been offroaded (check for scratches in the underbody paint). Also don't be afraid to use craigslist, you will get a MUCH better price than a stupid dealer.|

|Bobthegod||They ALL sound good, but pics is where it's at. Post some photos will help a lot to decide also. But just for the sake of things I'd go with the '05, take the extra money and modify it to your hearts content. Because no matter which one you get YOU will not be able to keep your hand and imagination for changing/adding just a few things. Once you buy one it's a disease......You Will See!!!|

|4Jeepn||1st I would figure out what you can afford. Then from there decide which you like best. Both are fine. The new engine is fine as it as been used in mini vans for a long long time. Also see if you can find a used rubicon TJ in your area I have seen them for 12-15k around here, that would be my pick.|

|TJRP||most say the 4.0 in the 2005 is a better engine. It is tried and true. The 3.8 in the 2008 and 2010 haven't seen the same amount of abuse over the years so they don't have the reputation of the 4.0 yet. Both engines will get between 15 and 20 mpg. The TJ(2005) will be a little cheaper to modify and is a good deal for only 12,500. It is not as wide as the JK(2008 and 2010) so it will fit on the trails a little better. Both Jeep models have a similar transmission if auto (4 speed) if manual I believe they are both 6 speed. I would go for the 2005, but I'm biased. Good Luck, let us know what you get.|

|gajeepdawg||Personally I like the looks of the TJ's a little more. Not sure about how the engines compare though. But if its between choice two and three, I would go with choice two, unless you plan on a whole heck of a lot of upgrades anyway. Good luck.|

Once you make your decision, any of them will be great. And it depends what you might want to do with it and how you are going to use it.
If you are just looking for a driver, I would look at NEW, maybe 0% financing now available so payment would be less than the used. And you have all those warranties.
If you are going to build it and use it off road, warranty doesn't matter so much and all would need many of the same modifications. On thought, the painted fenders on the Sahara can catch brush, etc. and get the "arizona penstripes" if you leave them on. All is all, on a budget, new with 0% financing and warranty might be my thought.

Some Help Please
New to this, and did a little looking around.
1. 2005 Wrangler X, 20k miles, softtop, stock. $12,500
2. 2008 Sahara 26k miles, softtop, stock. $20,000
3. Dealer said with rebates, a base 2010 for $20,000??
Money is an issue, and would prefer the lower payment, but if it's the much wiser thing to do, than I would consider a higher payment.
Drove the 2008 Sahara auto today, and it was awesome. Handeled and accelerated great. It felt more truck like, than I thought it would. Felt great looking out over the hood It was also a little cush with all the features, and great stereo. Did a little "wheelin" in a big empty parking lot. with plenty of barriers and curbs. I'm hooked.
Is the new engine better? Reliable?
