Ha ha, I was joking. My initial thought on the oil change was odd, but I don't think they would put it in unless it was fine. Either way it's documented if my engine magically blows up.

I had the same question as the Op after my first oil change at the dealership. on the invoice it says they used 5w-30, and I'm like the oil cap under the hood says 20???
Maybe this is just the dealerships way of slowly sabotaging our engines so we will be forced to go back to them to rebuild our engines or buy another jeep sooner than we should!!!

|ADee1||Check the OM to be sure. I remember reading that if 5W20 isn't available 5W30 is fine if it meets a certain Fiat spec. Being I live in sunny San Diego now given the choice I'd use 5W30 and wouldn't think twice about it.|

|Gumbys69||Part of it is also fuel economy. 5w20 flows easier and therefore gets a tiny bit better mileage but as jeep sells thousands of wranglers it all adds up for the C.A.F.E ratings. Ever notice an 88 GM truck has 10w30 on the cap but the Identical 89 GM truck has 5w30? They found that it affects their C.A.F.E. Rating and changed it. Today's tech they discovered you can get away with 5w20 and still be safe. Use what the manual suggests.|

Do not use 5w30 if you have had a serious allergic or skin reaction to 5w30. Some people can have serious skin reactions while taking 5w30, some of which can become life-threatening. These can include rash, swelling, redness, and peeling of the skin. Some people can have allergic reactions to 5w30, some of which can be life-threatening and include: swelling of the face, mouth, and throat that can cause trouble breathing. If you have these symptoms or have a rash with peeling skin or blisters in your mouth, stop taking 5w30 and get medical attention right away.
Before using 5w30, tell your doctor if you have a history of heart or blood vessel problems. If you have new or worse heart or blood vessel symptoms during treatment, tell your doctor. Get emergency medical help right away if you have any symptoms of a heart attack or stroke.
The most common side effects of 5w30 include nausea (30%), sleep problems, constipation, gas and/or vomiting. If you have side effects that bother you or don't go away, tell your doctor. It's some serious $#!t. I'd stick with the 5w20.

|quartermiler||I seem to recall seeing in the manual that 5w30 can be used if 5w20 isn't available. Some years back, Chrysler's decision to use to5w20 was supposedly important for insuring fastest oil delivery to some valve train components. One or more Chrysler model vehicle motors had reportedly experienced valve train component damage, before 2005, which led to the lighter weight oil being preferred. Take this with a grain of salt, as I'm recalling comments by service department staff at my local dealership when we serviced my wife's 2005 Sebring when it was new.|

It could harm your warranty if there is an oil related failure or engine issue. I found that I had 6 Gallons of Castrol GTX I used in my '08 Rubi, that does not meet Chrysler Specs, so I took it back to WalMart and traded it for Penzoil - which does.
Is there another vehicle you can use it in? I bought the Mopar Lifetime warranty, so I am trying to make sure any maintenance I do meets Chrysler specs. But even with the standard 5 year/100K warranty I would not want to give any reason for Chrysler to void my warranty.
All that said, it'd probably be fine. But it's just not worth it to me.

Consequences of running 5w30 instead of 20?
Just traded in my 2012 JKU for a 2014. Old one used 5w30. New one uses 5w20. I've got 2 cases of 30 sitting in the garage. Any real harm in using it in my 2014? I'd rather put it to use.
