SPDNJOE I used to do a lot of wheeling there years ago. We used to go out by the old landing strip. My friends father lives in B.S. His last name is Partridge. You've probably seen his Kawasaki green class 5/16 baja with a built acura eng in it. It's kind of street legal.
I will definately PM you when I go out there again. It's been about 10 yrs.

Fred1 Yes, It is illegal to install or sell a used Cat. Who's checking? I am going to double check that it may be the heat shield that is loose.

Thanks for the replies, Fred

Fred1 Yea George, I spoke with Plaza and they said they can weld in a universal Cat. The problem is I keep my Jeep at my house in Borrego Springs so I was hoping for a direct fit and install it myself. I may bring it home during the summer (when it's as hot as the surface of the sun there) and have them do it. Thanks for the help, PM me if you are going to be in B.S. Great wheelin there.

89PBR96 I'm not saying just saying a shop will not install it for you but you could do it your self

Yeah, but if I could find a used one I'd install it. My cat's shot and I just lost my job. So, the genius lawmakers are going to have me driving on a bad cat, instead of a good condition used cat until I can afford to replace it.

SPDNJOE Fred1,
I placed a call to a muffler shop here in OC that I have been using for 22 yrs. They said they will call me back with a price in about 1/2 hour.

Fred1 I am in South Orange County

meyers I have heard some take the cat off and knock the insides out with a pipe or long bar by poking it through the end. Never done it myself but may be a quick fix if you cannot find one right away.

kdukes4 sorry man...
01-22-2010 09:38 PM
Fred1 Thanks kdukes4, you had me excited until I read 2.5L. I may buy an out of state Cat and reinstall mine for inspection when the time comes.
01-22-2010 09:32 PM
kdukes4 ooooo damn i didn't notice you had a 4.0, so i dont think that'll work.
01-22-2010 09:31 PM
kdukes4 did you have the local dealer check it out? call them up and tell them that you believe your jeep has a recall : E22-PCM reprogramming and catalytic converter inspection

It appears the failures are only for 1996-1998 Chrysler vehicles (including Jeep Wrangler and Cherokee). It appears that both the cat and the PCM were recalled. The cat for falling apart and rattling and the PCM for not detecting a cat failure. I wasnt able to find anything showing the exact range of VINs this was for... but perhaps yours doesnt fall into that range.

From the first page of the recall
**************************************…
August 2006 Dealer Service Instructions for:
Emissions Recall E22 Reprogram PCM and Inspect Catalytic Converter

1996 (XJ) Jeep® Cherokee
1996 (ZJ) Jeep® Grand Cherokee
NOTE: This recall applies only to the above vehicles equipped with a 4.0L (ERH) engine.

1997 - 1998 (AN) Dodge Dakota
1997 - 1998 (XJ) Jeep® Cherokee
1997 – 1998 (TJ) Jeep® Wrangler (built after June 30, 1996)
NOTE: This recall applies only to the above vehicles equipped with a 2.5L (EPE) engine.

IMPORTANT: Some of the involved vehicles may be in dealer used vehicle inventory. Dealers should complete this recall service on these vehicles before retail delivery. Dealers should also perform this recall on vehicles in for service. Involved vehicles can be determined by using the VIP inquiry process.

Subject
The Powertain Control Module (PCM) on about 467,400 of the above vehicles may not be capable of detecting a deteriorating catalytic converter. Also, under certain conditions, some catalytic converters may be subject to mechanical degradation that causes a rattle.

Catalytic converter needed

My 98 4.0 has something loose inside the Cat. It doesn't affect the performance but it sounds just like I have a broken exhaust pipe hanger. I have searched the web looking for an after market Cat but can't find one. The dealer wants $850.00. I don't want to go to a straight pipe. Anyone know of anyone who makes a California legal Cat? Any one in California have one to sell?
