|ashsez||I replaced my front axle with one my friend did not need. It turns out he forgot to mention he had put front locking Spider? gear. I can not get the left front to unlock in 2wd, is that the way it is supposed to work? It sounds like a lot more work to pull it out, my front shaft has a bit of a vibration at 50, so I guess it would be cheaper to replace that?|

|J0J0||hey i am having the same problem so i checked my switch and one of the vac hose on the switch it self was broken so i went and bought another one now here is the problem the new one i got has 2 keys on it and the one i took out has one and there is no way of switching it around because i have a two key on my hose line. hope someone understands what i was saying... now i need to know is their different switches for 1993 jeep wrangler 2.5|

Thank you for the wonderful information, VERY HELPFUL, but i do have a question....
I have the same problem and i just got my car. I did make sharp turns to make sure the 4WD is off, but the indicator wont turn off. If i dont want to go through the hassle of changing the vacuum switch, would this cause further problems or is it really not a big deal?
(i do not have the time to change the switch) so i basically need to know if there are any risks in leaving the car as is.

|j1mbo824||If you shift it into 4 wheel, and the indicator doesnt come on or the 4wd, does that mean its the vacuum switch since its not sending out a signal to the indicator or shifting into 4wd?|

|jeepgazan||A similar problem happened to me after i had a new worked on my suspension. Okay so what the problem was, is that 4wd was disengaged but light was on... I went underneath the car and switched my vacumm line. My vacumm line has 2 hoses so it's easy to get confused. I put right on left and left on right, and it worked. Hopefully this helps!|

|funjeeper69||Well I do not have the same problem. My 4x4 does not like to enguage and when it does the light flashes. I live in Germany and its cold now. When it gets warmer I will still trace the vacc lines and check for leaks and cracks.|

If you can spend the money, go with the posi lock. Every time I fixed a problem with the stock setup it would just break again. Haven't had any issues since I have the cable.

|shrek101||Yeah I was having same problem. 4x4 Light stayed on but had no 4wd. But transfer case was still engaged. I first changed out the shift accuator on the front axle. The original one had rusted on the inside. Then had 4wd but would not disengage. So I changed out the vacuum switch on the trancase then badabing badaboom. old switch had ball bearing locked in up position. back to jeeping again. This post helped alot. Thanks all|

i bet it has already been by passed .
and yes leave it that way.
the vacuum was a very weak link .
having it locked in will not effect handling , ride or mpg in any way.
the new jeeps come that way.
here is how the bypass should be done , you might want to take the half hour to see if it was done and done right

Wrangler yj 1994
I just got a jeep 1994 and the 4x4 is working fine 4L & 4H, but I do not see any vacuum or pisi lock system mounted on the front axle. The vacuum lines are disconected, so I asume that it was bypassed somehow.
I'll appreciate your suggestions on what is the most convenient, is it ok to keep it locked all time?? or should I install a locking system.

|Slugo||Well this is a great thread, of course it did not help me out until I pulled off the shift motor and had water run down my arm. Now that I need to purchuse one is there any suggestions, I have already looked around but figured I would get some diffrent buisnesses that are more cheaper. I also am a big fan of manual lockouts, but seeing this is my first Jeep would this be a good time to invest in that or stick with the vacuum system?|

I am having somewhat of simular issues, however I am about to run a vaccum line from the engine to a 2 way manual air valve/switch on the dash and activate the front axle that way. Still have to flick the switch to activete the front axle but simplyfies the issue and allows 2 low operation for crawling around. I am too cheap ...errr...thrifty for the cable unit right now. Will likely build my own cable unit when it's time.

|LASouthernRide||Thank you for this post. I had no idea that the indicator light failure was due to a faulty vacuum switch. I thought it was just something electrical that i shouldnt worry about. but now that you have resolved my problem I will go and fix it as soon as this rain quits. Thanks again!|

stuck in 4H
Bought a 94 sight unseen for 2500, it has 165K on it, 5 spd, 4.0...
Drove fine, put it in 4H to try it out, now can't get it to get out of 4H, can get it to go to neutral then 4L for a second 'til it pops out of it back to N...then I move the shifter to 2H but it's stuck in 4H, can tell since light is on and wheels bind on dry pavement...
I'm annoyed since I had a TJ and thought I'd give a YJ a shot...

|strungxout||My 4x4 light is always on... I decided to try it out so I went to the nearest trail and still couldn't tell if it was working cause my Jeep doesn't struggle in 2wd. I tried it in low range and is seemed ok, then went to take it out of low range and it was stuck. After a lot of force I finally got it out, but it seems like the 4x4 only works half the time.|

|95muddyYJ||Ok I just got a 95 yj and the 4wd linkage was loose but even when loose or tight it still shifted into 4wd and out of it just fine but I have no dash indicators that tell me if I am in 4wd or 4lo? Am I facing another different problem or could it be the vaccum still. I will trace them tomorrow since it seems pretty straight forward.|
