beme_nathan "if you were to steer hard to avoid something in the road this thing would topple right over the steering is way to touchy anything it may be ?"
I can't say if there is anything wrong/right with your mom's jeep. But I can tell you that if you are getting out of any other vehicle and drive a TJ with good tight front end, it feels scary at hi-way speeds... until you get used to it. The first few days I didn't dare drive my TJ over 50 mph... Now that I've driven my Jeep for several months it feels normal and for instance my dad's 95 Nissan Hard body feels wallowy and way to vague and it hasn't changed, Just my perception.

If my posting came across as saying that you are driving the Jeep incorrectly, then you misunderstood. I was just saying that my Jeep steers tighter than other vehicles I have owned and that I, as in personally don't drive it like a race car. If my posting hurt your feelings, then feel free to ignore any future comments I may make.

Whatever "fixed" your steering issue wasn't caused by flipping those links over. The links themselves have no bearing on ride, steering, or handling so long as they are connected between the axle & antiswaybar. It just doesn't work that way. Nope.

thelightguy crazy would never think that 2 in off set in would change the body roll....but if it did i stand corrected...the reason behind the race car comment is from your original post and jerking the wheel and stuff....

dlfd911 I just went out and looked at mine, and yours are indeed reversed. I don't see that changing handling characteristics either, but you might hear some noise as it looks like it has metal to metal contact.

blazin383 hmmm ? pretty sure i never said anything about driveing it like a race car ! I took it out for a general check of the jeep never said i was racein around town here ! Iv owend jeep wranglers jeep cherokees suzuki samurai's i do know how they act on or off road. and her new jeep felt very strange . oh and buy the way i put the links in there right spot and guess what it fixed it no more erratic steering !

you are also looking at stock vs. aftermarket in these pictures.......those grease joints are designed to move and some times look smashed im not convinced that this be the way it is has anything to do with the body roll issue you think you are having....its a jeep not a race car

turdhurdler I am not sure if this is any help, but when I got my Jeep (it's my first Jeep) I noticed a much more radical steering radius over other vehicles I had driven. From my understanding, Jeeps come with a tighter turning radius for manuverability reasons. I actually like the steering traits of my Jeep and just don't drive it like a race car.

Jerry Bransford Again... even if those antiswaybar links (they are not brackets) are reversed, and I am not convinced they are, that still would not cause ANY change in handing, steering feel, or any of that. The horizontal distance between the top & bottom bushings is identical no matter which end is on top.

blazin383 thats what id thought id like to meet the previous owner that did this to find out what else he messed up I know misstakes happen but still ... this is probely the cause of the over aggresive steering im haveing ha ha

Vaultzz Thats a very easy fix.

The brackets are backwards, Just take them off, spin them around, and put them back on so that that bottom bend is facing out

blazin383 here are the pictures of the jeeps sway bar links notice how bad the bushings are geting squezed from the odd angle the swaybar links are.. also see the distance the swaybar is away from the framerail on the passenger side and how close it is on the drivers side ..

Jerry Bransford Backward links would not affect the handling, even if they are indeed really on backwards.

blazin383 had another ? think i may have figured it out first the stock tire size on this tj p215 75 r15 the size on it now is 245 75r16 so that probely may affect my issue .. next is still the sway bar actually the sway bar links i belive are on backwards i google searched pictures of jeep wrangler stock suspension pictures i found one that they took of there passenger side it showed a little of the sway bar link i compared the two and mine looks backwards to theres is this possible ??? also ill take pictures of my sway bar links and put them on later tonight if not they will be on by the morning ...are im sure that would help alot !

Jerry Bransford Just rotate the front tie-rod until the front outside edges of your tires are 1/16" to 1/8" closer together in front than they are in the rear.

Here's how to set toe-in and straighten the steering wheel after you set the toe-in and both are easily done... Basic Jeep Front End Alignment

The below photos show a more repeatable way of measuring the distances between the tires at the front & rear so you can more easily set the toe-in. It just takes some 1" square tubing & a couple clamps like are in the pictures. Mark the square tubing at points equal to your tire diameter like 33" apart & measure between the left & right sides from the marks.

blazin383 i was thinking the alingment was off to . yeah I can do the toe in never done one on a jeep wrangler though would you posibley know the specs ? thanks for the help !

Jerry Bransford Have the front-end alignment checked to make sure the toe-in is within specs. Don't let anyone talk you into a "full" alignment because only the toe-in is adjustable on her TJ. Are you mechanical enough to feel comfortable checking & setting the toe-in yourself? It's nothing more than a tape measure & a half-inch wrench plus some big pliers.

blazin383 ok that does sounds right and yes there is still the antiswaybar is still in the back .. im just concerend it seems that if you were to steer hard to avoid somthing in the road this thing would toppel right over the steering is way to touchy anything it may be ?

Jerry Bransford The antiswaybar can slide off to the side like that which is normal but does not cause any change to its effectiveness. Some have installed locking collars around the antiswaybar where it exits its hold-down brackets to prevent that but it's not a problem you need to be concerned over.

Is there an antiswaybar in the rear? Sometimes people who don't know any better remove them from a TJ but it handles much better onroad & the suspension actually works better offroad (more balanced) if the rear antiswaybar is connected.

I have a ? regarding the sway bar on my mothers 2003 tj wrangler . when she got home from the dealership I had taken the wrangler out for a test drive myself to see how it ran drove and handeled ect.. I imidiatly felt that the steering was very very responsive i would turn the steering wheel kinda quick and it would react like it wanted to turn way to fast kinda felt like severe body roll . I brought it home and gave it a look over i hoped under the front and found that the sway bar looked bent ..on the passenger side the sway bar was about 2" away from the frame where the sway bar link conects and on the drivers side the sway bar was mabye 1/2" away from the frame where the sway bar link conects . is this normal? or is it bent ?and how would this have happened ? my guess past owner was rock crawling . other than that it drives straight feels very good just the steering issue thanks for any help !!!
