Help! Weird steering clunk!!!!
So I woke up in the morning, and got in my Jeep to go to work, and as soon as I turned the wheel to turn left (from about 11 oclock to 10 oclock) the steering
slipped a weeeeeeeeeeeee bit and this mighty CLUNK sound came from where the bottom of the steering box and the steering column meet. I am thinking that something is rubbing, because it is intermittent, and seems to happen at slow speeds, and turns (especially left, when a right hand turn is made, a spongier rubbing noise is made) at about 0-15 miles and hour. I am slightly concerned, very JEEP capable, yet not real experienced in steering box/column issues. It may be a bushing at the tie rod end, or the pittman arm, or the signs of a steering box itself.
SO I BESEECH THEE WRANGLER FORUM TJ FREAKS:
1.What signs (besides leaking (which there is none in this case)) are evidence of a soon to fail steering box?
2. Any experience with a similar CLUNK? This is the most accurate way to spell the sound "KLUUNK" and you can feel a CLUNK in the firewall. The steering slips maybe 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch.
I am aware that this needs to be fixed quickly, and want to do the work myself, although I can see myself taking her in to be diagnosed.
