I agree. Wheels don't just fall off if the lugs are on tight. Locking lugs may be the way to go.

|Tiburon||I'd have to say its foul play. Even if the lugs were improper, being tightned should keep it on there. I'd go and invest on some locking lugs that have a special key that can't be tampered with, then you'll have peace of mind about that.|

|04moneypit||Yeah, I had almost the same thing happen, guy pulled three out of five lug nuts and loosened the other two, I felt something funny on the way home, and didn't think anything of it, but when I got home I noticed the missing lugs, thankfully, and nothing happened. They or I never found out who did it. So just make sure to tell him to check his lugs daily, easiest solution to this very serious problem.|

If the lugs are correct and they held on the trip home I would think they would be ok on normal driving. One possibility might be a jealous enemy of your son loosening the lugs at opertune moments. I speak from experience as I had that happen to me when I was in highschool with a result of my Impala hitting the ground at 50mph and the guy that did it being sent to juvi (wasn't very fun or exciting when it happened).
Call me Paranoid I guess.

Are the lug nuts coming off?
are you using the right lugnuts?
You can't use regular steal wheel lugnuts on an aluminum wheel.

torque lugnuts to 90 ft lbs... drive.... retorque...drive.... retorque..drive... retorque...
just keep the torque wrench, a 4" extention and socket in the jeep... and torque often.

97 wrangler American Racing AR-23 rims
My son recently bought a 97 jeep wrangler with 33x12.50 all terrains mounted on American Racing AR-23 rims and twice now his drivers side rear rim and tire have fallen off while driving (luckily no accidents, roll-over or anyone hurt...). Anyone have any ideas why this might be happening.
After first incident new rim bought and remounted, then bought new rear axle and then the 2nd incident happened. We bought the jeep from Massachussetts and drove 4hour ride home at 75mph without any incidents but now since 4-wheeling around home this has happened twice.
Any help about this is greatly appreciated and we look forward to any ideas....he is a bit afraid to drive it again since last episode was driving 45mph on a highway....lost rim and crossed over 4 lanes before coming to stop in a yard.
