Daystar makes extended bumpstops and VIBRATION will cause WELD FATIGUE, if you ain't got the vibration those tailgate mounts will support up to 50% overweight, over the stock spare
Now if you're dealing with less than 4" of backspacing, or have to add spacers on the spare mount, you're overstressing the hinge weld fatigue design and you should got to swing away spare tire carrier !!

|Vaultzz||they were only about 1cm away, I couldnt find any extensions that small. Not that it would have helped the tailgate not break anyway|

Thats all true, but
Another reason the stock tailgate welds fatigue, is, because some jeep owners don't usually put NEW BUMPSTOPS on the gate to stop tire bouncing/vibration/position stress

The stock one works fine for stock sized tires, especially if you dont' do a lot of off-roading/bumpy stuff.
The problem with it is that it relies too much on the strength of the sheet metal in your tailgate. With lots of weight (big tires) or lots of bouncing, it starts to "tin can" the metal on the door (bends the metal back and forth until it starts to stress the seams). A really big tire will also do damage to the tailgate hinges - they just can't support the weight.
Aftermarket tire carriers use some additional support - the bumper, the frame, or a bracket that goes around the roll bar supports. Some also include things like an extension for the brake light.

newbie questions about rear tire carrier
curious why people upgrade to a rear tire carrier mounted to the bumper? whats wrong with the stock version?
