Even with D-rings, there's a good chamce of ruining a good $50 strap with LOOPS, if the stukee doesn't have external recovery points !!

Carrying the tsrap is always a good idea. It's like having jumper cables. You may need them. As far as hooking up to another vehicle, I wouldn't do it unless there were obvious and accessible safe hook up points. There's too much plastic, and tyoo many things that can go wrong, and unfortunately, so many people are a$$holes and will sue you if something goes wrong. That's why wreckers carry lots of insurance. On the other hand, if it's a jeep or another such vehicle with good solid accessible hooks or loops, strap up and yank.
As far as winching, I've seen jeeps winch out larger vehicles, but they used tree savers to anchor up. I've also heard of folks using danforths. That seems like it could be dangerous.

I have done my fair share of pulling people
out of the snow.
It really depends on lots of things,you dont want to hurt their car
or hurt your jeep
If both are agreed and easy enough
go for it
I had a 70 IH heavy half 4x4(the binder)
that pulled so many car/truck/jeeps out of the
ditch it wasnt funny

hope that the vehicle doing the winching is heavier than the force needed to pull the other one out.
A rule when helping someone, is let them hook up their car...so if it gets damaged, they did it...
and be gentle on the yank.

Good question...if you don't mind, I'd like to add in a little more to the same topic (I'll also try to help answer your questions).
First...an attempted answer...I've never towed anybody out that didn't have obvious attachment points. I've also never towed, nicer, newer daily drivers however. I'm thinking typically there are attachment points under the front and rear of the body that are used to secure the vehicles when they're being towed/winched onto a flat-bed wrecker.
Question I had that fits in this discussion...and figured I'll just add it in instead of start a new, related topic...
If you have a good winch, what's the proper way to winch a vehicle out of the ditch without having an anchor vehicle or rear anchor point available??

|Schmo||Most cars, at least on the back will have an eye that you can hook the strap to. Seems like most American cars have them attached permanently whereas the BMW and Mercedes have a plug on the bumper and if you remove the plug, the eye screws in. Sometimes the eye on cars is pretty small so getting your strap thru might be difficult . . . pick up a D Ring as that would probably make it easier to attach to them.|

Recovery noob question
I'm a noob to helping anyone get unstuck but I do carry around a recovery strap just in case the need arises. With all the snow we've gotten here lately it might have gotten some use if I'd spent more time out on the roads. So I've got front and rear tow hooks which makes it obvious where I hook up but what happens if you need to help get a car unstuck but they don't have any obvious attachment points? What is the proper way to use my strap to help them out without breaking anything? BTW the strap I've got is the kind with the loops on the end as I heard the ones with metal hooks can be dangerous. Thanks gang.
