Jerry Bransford It's a pretty simple swap, only four bolts hold the transfer case to the rear of the transmission & you would not need to drop the transmission to make the swap.

Just make sure any used 231 transfer case you buy for it came out of a '97 or newer Wrangler with the same engine (4.0L vs. 2.5L) and same type transmission.

rday78 im a reasonably handy guy and im about to attempt rebuilding my auto transmission. From what ive seen, rebuilding a transfer case would be much easier. Never been there but i think it can be done.

Transfer Case Swap

Hey guys. I found a 97 TJ for sale that I could pick up for relatively cheap. The only problem is the it needs a new transfer case or the current transfer case needs to be rebuilt. How hard is it to swap the transfer case? Does anyone have any experience or possibly a write up? I work as a motorcycle mechanic in my spare time, so I have lots of tools and the mechanical ability to completely disassemble a bike and put it back together. I figure a TC swap wouldnt be to bad. Any tips?

Thanks in advance
