If you have a manual transmission, there could be a problem engaging 2nd 4th and reverse gears because of the angle the transfer case drop kit creates. If you experience this, you need to pull the rubber boot off your shifter and cut the metal on the back of the shifter hole.

If you have a manual tranny, sit in your jeep and look at the shifter. The rubber boot at the bottom of the shifter? That comes off and there is a hole there. The side of that hole closest to the back of the jeep is where you will need to trim...


Or you could just drive around in 1st 3rd and 5th and push it backwards...lol

harleydragon I don't have a pic..if you take the shifter boot off you will see a rectangular hole in the jeeps tub that the shifter fits through..a small section of the tubs sheetmetal in between the rectangular hole and the screw holes where the boot attaches may need to be removed..I would try it first because this may not be necessary

coolin4u My plan is a few weeks is to install a 1'' MML and remove my transfer case drop,i only have 3'' of suspension lift and 1'' body and have no issues right now just don't like the clearance loss with the drop.I'm hoping the MML works out ok.

simonclay When I did my TC drop I couldn't shift into 2nd, 4th or R. So I trimmed a little bit of metal like Harley says. But then the lower rubber boot that the shifter goes through was binding and not really letting me go into 2nd or R. So I need to move my shift boots back about 3\4 inch. Just so you know

Square_Eyes They don't come stock with CV shafts or slip shafts, stock yjs have a slip yoke on the transfer case that allows it to change length, if you are running a slip yoke eliminator kit then you will need the drive shaft to have a slip joint (one that moves in and out, changing the length of the shaft). A CV drive shaft is also known as a double Caradan joint or constant velocity (CV) meaning it has one end that has two u-joints increasing the range of motion the drive shaft can move before binding and breaking parts.

if you are talking about the shifter,you probably won't have any clearance problems..if you should have a problem with it hitting the tub sheetmetal it will be on the backside where 2nd,4th and reverse are located..then you can just trim a little of that sheetmetal..same as you would with a tall body lift

Moneymaker4567 No my stock CV drive shaft is not long enough. But I'm saying for a transfer case drop kit how can I avoid or fix the stick messing up ?

harleydragon the driveshaft has to be able to change lengths as the axle moves up and down..this can be done with the stock slip yoke that moves in and out of the transfer case or with a driveshaft with a slip yoke in the middle but you must have one or the other..if you don't you will bust the transfer case

Moneymaker4567 I'm saying I don't have enough money for a CV rear drop kit. And that's what I'm afraid of my gears being messed up !!

YJ fanatic How are you running a SYE without a CV shaft? Do you have a normal shaft with a slip in it? Because its not possible to run an SYE with the stock shaft.

sevenservices The only thing I've seen is that with a 4" lift and no drop kit, its good your running an SYE. If not, you'd trash u-joints weekly.

Aside from that, I still have not adjusted my shift linkage on the column (auto). It rides a little under where its supposed to. Basically, N is Drive and Drive is 2 and 2 is 1 and 1 is at the bottom. Also, when its up in Park the shifter bumps up against the dash.

Its prob. just a linkage I need to adjust but haven't felt like dealing with yet lol.

So I have my Yj lifted to about 4 inches ( I say about because I have shackles and suspension lift kits) and I have a slip yoke eliminator but no CV rear drive shaft and no 300$ right now. But I was wondering what are the disadvantages of a transfer case drop kit on a yj (besides the fact it lowers your clearance) thanks
