wow, wish i had that hook up. i just picked up a half doors, but doubt i could find that kind of deal around here.

GCChamp Found someone that works at a local auto dealer that's going to paint my doors for $100 each. I'm going to go that route. Should get the doors back this week. Felt really good about taking them there because he asked me to bring one of the half doors so that he could match the color.

GCChamp My concern about locking the doors was so that someone couldn't easily walk up, open the doors, remove a few nuts and walk away with a set of doors. I took the door apart to see how tough it would be to swap out the locks and then put it back together. The half doors would be a breeze but the locks on the full doors looks tough to get too. I ordered a set of the anti-theift nut sets from Quadratec today so that wont be as big of an issue now.

kilgoretrout844 Yea i fell the same way. Even in a car or truck i usually dont lock the doors. I think stolen cd player is cheaper than a stolen cd player and a drivers window glass.

I am the same way...I don't lock my doors often unless I have something in my Jeep like my boss' mail or something that I don't want stolen while I'm at lunch or running errands.

However, if someone decides to walk off with a set of full doors because they were unlocked and easy enough to remove...it might be more beneficial to lock them. lol

My friend constantly locks the door behind him even though I've repeatedly told him that I'd prefer them to just open the door and realize there's nothing to steal (I lock the glove box with my GPS in it and that's it) rather than have them cut my top and realize it...so I finally told him, if he locks my door and someone cuts my top, I will be expecting a $600 check from him to replace my top.

IndyJeepMan The reason I ask about the top. Since you have a softtop. Dont even worry about locks on your doors. Whats that gonna do to stop a guy with a knife?

I never, ever lock my doors.. My top is far to expensive to replace because the burglar didnt want to unzip it... Just fyi, and that saves you money

holes Kilgore, go to car-part.com, thats where I found mine. Had smoke residue on it, paid 240 for a driver side.

kilgoretrout844 I would say 2 cans would be enough to cover both doors with up to 4 coats. Make shure to buy a can of sealer also.

For the window crank you can buy a tool that makes the job really easy. You can buy it at most autoparts stores and it is only a few bucks. Otherwise you can get the c-clip off with a long flat screwdriver, but that way can really suck.

GCChamp Thanks for the advice. Got any idea how many cans it will take to put 3 - 4 coats on each door? I would like to get it mixed all at the same time. Also what is the best way to get the window handle off? Thanks again.

kilgoretrout844 Sounds like you guys have been keeping pretty busy, sound like fun though. I will keep an eye on craigslist for some doors, 600 does sound like a pretty good deal, i would be willing to pay that for a good set.

Take your paint code to your local paint jobber. Where I live we have an Automotive Finishes where we get most of our paint. We have a CarQuest that mixes dupont. And Oreilly's mixes sherwinn williams autotive paint. Any of those places can mix you a rattlecan of your color just give them the code.

You will want to strip your doors down to just the shell. Take off the interior panels, the outside door handle, lock cylinder, belt molding, window track, glass ect..

Then you will want to look it over really good for any small dings or scratches, because if you dont fix them now they will stick out like a sore thumb after you put fresh paint over top of them. So if you have any of these you will need to buy some polyester bodyfiller. 80 grit sandpaper, 180 grit, 220 grit and 320 grit, and a primer surfacer. (I can go more into detail on how to repair dents if you need me to just let me know)

After all dings and scratches are repaired you will want to sand the entire thing down with 320-400 grit sandpaper, and the backside of the door scuff with a red scotchbrite pad. Blow all the dust off and hang the door up from the rafters in your garage with some bailing wire then you are ready to paint.

A good idea would be to hang plastic over your celing in the garage to keep any dust and dirt from falling into your work. Sparying the garage floor and walls out with a garden hose. All that will give you a clean work area.

Wipe your doors down with a paint prep solvent, let it flash, then wipe the doors down with a tack cloth to pick up any dirt on the surface.
-Apply a coat of sealer primer over the entire door (you can buy sealer in a spray can as well) Just one coat and let it flash.
-Apply two to four coats of the rattlecan color, letting each coat flash before you put on the next. (when they mix the color in the rattle can in is single stage meaning you dont have to apply clear coat) So after 3 to 4 coats the door should have a deep glossy finish and you should be good to go. Let the doors dry overnight and put them back together.

If you get any runs or large amounts of dirt, or just want an even better looking finish. I could give you the steps on how to color sand and buff them. But to get them painted yourself shouldnt cost you more than 50-75 dollars in supplies at the local paint jobber.

GCChamp Kilgore, any pointers you can give me would be appreciated. From who to buy the paint to steps I need to take to get a good job. I have been watching ebay and craigslist for about 8 months bidding on doors and looking at prices. They two I bought cost me $600. Compared to what I've seen on Ebay they were a steal. They are gold in color and not a spot of rust my son's jeep is Blue (PCJ Paint code). All of the hardware works well. After all of the looking and bidding I have done I would say Craigslist is your best shot at a decent deal. Ebay is too price driven and the doors all seem to be up on the east coast where rust is an issue. We bought the jeep last summer and have been doing little things to it so it will be ready for him when he turns 16. We've replaced all of the fluids, brakes, repainted the plastic wheel flares, and installed neoprene seat covers. Hard doors were a major goal. After I get them painted our next projects will be replacing the ac compressor (it works very sporatically and repairing the fuel float that works for one tankfull and not the next. Sorry for rambling...thanks in advance for any advice.

GCChamp Indy, yes I have a softtop. Kilgore and Holes, thanks for the info. Since I still have the halfdoors I may order some rattlecan paint to match my codes and do it myself this summer when the weather warms up and I put the half doors back on.

holes and also, just had my driver full door repainted, cost me 150, everyone else around town estimated at 325-350 a piece.

holes call a lock smith, i had a key made for a cylinder for 10 bucks.

kilgoretrout844 I would think the lock cylinders would swap no problem. If they dont you can purchase new cylinders at any autoparts store.

As far as painting them if you are going to pay a shop to do it I could give you a rough estimate....If the doors are in good shape meaning NO rust, and no major dents, the shop would probably charge at least an hour of body labor on each door, and at least an hour of paint labor on each door. Lets just say the shop has a flat rate of 50 dollars an hour (about what my shops rate is) you already have 200 dollars in labor. A rough guess of 200 dollars in paint, materials, disposal fees ect.... 400 dollars roughly??? Like I said that would be a ball park figure but it could be alot more just depending on where you go, what shape the doors are in, and like everything else in life you will get what you pay for. And honestly 400 bucks is probably lowballing

Half and Full Door Locks - Painting Full Doors

I just purchased some used full doors for my 1997 TJ but they did not have the keys for the doors. I have half doors on the TJ now. Will the locksets from the half doors fit the full doors?

Also, anyone ever painted full doors? How much did it cost?
