|Renegade||But do I need a new cat? since it will be emissions exempt? Can I just run the pipes from manifolds to mufflers? Does that even make sense? Should I replace the whole system? I'm not trying to put a lot of money into it, if I don't need to.|

if it gets bad enough u will get power loss and worse fuel economy like it was mentioned above, but it can also get to the point of stalling and failing to restart, at which point u can see it glow bright red lol.
id just go ahead and replace it if its getting clogged, id also look into why its getting clogged so this wont happen again and cost u more money as Cats are not cheap. IMO it wont be age, possibly running a lil rich, this a normal cause of that.

Thanks, any tell tale signs that it's getting worse? Right now, all I hear is the tin can noise, no biggie...yet. But, without noticing a power loss, is there something else that I would be able to notice that is starting to degrade the exhaust system? Maybe before it does too much damage?

Renegade, I have a 1994 which is usually exempt too (Less than 5K per year.) I wouldn't call your rig a car in here unless you want to get flamed.
My cat busted up a few years ago. My guy passed me for a few years, and then when the rest of the exhaust started rotting away, we just went ahead and did everything from the manifold back.
The danger is that the broken pieces could clog the exhuast causing a serious loss of power and fuel efficiency. So, keep an eye on things, and be ready to replace it.

New Member wanted to say hi and ask a question about my CAT
I bought a '91 Wrangler Renegade as a beater car about 2 years ago. I got it for a steal ($1900) and it's in excellent condition. Everytime I take it in to be serviced they praise how great condition it's in for having 118k miles. Needless to say, it's not considered a beater anymore. I love the car.
I just took it in to be serviced and heard a "tin can" noise. The SA told me it was carbon build up in the cat. They said I would need a new cat soon, but I won't fail emissions since it's not blocked. Well, I drive it less than 5k miles a year anyway and according to Pa standards, I am emissions exempt, and also, according to Pa, when a car is 20 years old it becomes emissions exempt--which will be next year regardless of mileage.
My point is, I won't need to replace the CAT since the car is exempt, but what do I have to worry about? It will get clogged one day, what harm does that do? What should I do, any recommedations?
