why thank you for that link...much helpful and i will look at doing this tonight

Coyote_94YJ You should actually notice a little more power when it's cold out like that NavyChief. Colder air is more dense and is the basic principle behind cold air intakes.

NAVYCHIEF i just ran mine in the cold morning air. about 32 deg. it worked smooth and very responsive. just like at 60 degrees. more later.

Eagleridge5 I am going to do mine this weekend. I could use a few extra oats. Some of you mentioned putting a 4.0 throttle body on a 2.5. What's that do?
02-21-2010 10:12 PM
MikeMTJ I haven't taken out that side plate yet, but I took out the horn. Like the chief said, I notice smoother acceleration. I'll probably take that plate out this week.
02-21-2010 09:26 PM
yjkid95 After reading this i ran outside and opened up the hood. I took the air box out and in ten minutes it was back in i took out the horn shaped resitrictor which was in the hole in the front of the air box. It had two tabs on either side needed a flat head screw driver to pop it out. Then on the left side (the side facing the motor) there is a plastic plate thats riveted to the air box. I drilled out the four rivits and removed the plate. Next to make sure mud wouldnt get in i took old window screens and cut some of the mesh to the same size of the plate. There are actually 8 small holes where the mesh could be screwed into. So i used 8 drywall screws to screw the mesh in. Took it out for a test ride and it deffinetly has a little better acceleration and throttle response might be in my head but i noticed a difference.

NAVYCHIEF will do.

thechink09 yeah i really doubt that thing add 80 HP. when ever you try it out post about it. i would like to see if it does anything
02-21-2010 07:21 PM
NAVYCHIEF yeah kina like that. i'll have to seal the box totally to keep the air from "leaking". the fans i got are from a trashed computer.....used to running all day long. if they burn up i'll just find some more heavy duty ones. the bit you sent me has the HP increase at 80hp. seems like a lot. it'll be fun to try. thanks for the info.

Coyote_94YJ Maybe 1-2mpg gain. Maybe.
02-21-2010 04:50 PM
thechink09 i hear ya. free is always nice
02-21-2010 04:41 PM
MikeMTJ We aren't talkin' like 10 more mpg, but maybe a little bit more. Nothing crazy, but it's worth it. It's free....any free mod is nice...but they are pretty rare. Just ask my check book.
02-21-2010 04:40 PM
thechink09 doing this will give you better gas mileage???
02-21-2010 04:36 PM
MikeMTJ Just did this on my 2.5L. It took about 10 minutes. You pretty much only need a flat head screw driver. Make sure you take the box out of the jeep, it makes it way easier to work on. After taking it out, I sat there reving my engine and it does make more noise. Nothing worth worrying about, unless that bothers you. My jeep is already noisy to begin with, but if this is going to give me a little better gas mileage then it's worth it to me.

Good luck!
02-21-2010 02:47 PM
Coyote_94YJ I noticed a little on my 4.0L. It's free so it couldn't hurt.
02-21-2010 02:44 PM
thechink09 well i have a 4.0L do you guys think i will have any noticeable change if i do it?
02-21-2010 02:40 PM
Jeep_Geek I did it a while back and didn't feel any noticeable improvement.
02-21-2010 02:17 PM
Coyote_94YJ Just the restrictor is fine. I didn't do that other bit.

i was just looking at that and i was wondering do you have to remove the side of the box? or can you just remove the air restrictor and get a power boost?
02-21-2010 01:50 PM
89YJproject well thanks for the help anyway
02-21-2010 01:49 PM
Coyote_94YJ I guess not. That setup in the writeup didn't look quite like the one that used to be on my Jeep either. Dunno.
02-21-2010 01:47 PM
89YJproject ya i checked tht out and he has a different box then me... i dont think mines aftermartket it looks stock but were the horn is on those pics i have what looks like a flat not a horn... and there's nowere it can be hiding, i guess i just dont have one...

Coyote_94YJ Is it the same diameter all the way through? The first few times I looked I couldn't tell because it looks like part of the intake. I can't remember on which side of the airbox it was on either so you might want to check both sides.
02-21-2010 01:02 PM
89YJproject then mine must be out because i took it off the top of the airbox off at the airbox, and at the throttle body and looked straight down the hose and there was nothing in there...
02-21-2010 12:49 PM
Coyote_94YJ It is a horn shaped device that is inside the piping for the air intake. It is black plastic like the rest of the intake. For me it was a PITA to get out.
02-21-2010 12:33 PM
89YJproject ^^^same, either it's not there or im reading somthing wrong...
