Jeep soft tops have leaked since.... Well... The 40's probably. Though I've only got experience with the last 20 years or so. If you're careful you can keep them from leaking, but it seems unlikely that jeep will suddenly come up with a wonder top that will give you the ease of use, interchangeability (with the hard top) and removal that we all demand, and solve every chance of a leak, in the next few years.

proenca hi there,

I have a JKU 2011 and we had horrible rainy days here in Lisbon, Portugal.

Passenger side carpet was drenched - almost floating on the water.

They replaced all the front door seals ( they said the drivers door seal was going away as well, any minute I would have leaks ) and it took two trips after this to the dealer to 100% fix the problem - it involves, acoording to the Jeep Portugal service guy ( really nice chap ) adjusting the bolts on the door, so the door sits more tightly and start sealing properly.

I now do regularly also do preventive maintenance, by doing vaseline on the freedom top seals and silicon spray on every door seal.

To test my theory, the rain gods were usefull and we had a terrible last week, raining cats and dogs again.

Jeep was left outside on purpose and everything is fine, 100% dry.

Tech also told me that I was lucky because I had installed the new seals ( apparently from 2012 onwards ) that cure the problem.

so far, so good !

Peter63 Hi there.
As of 2011-2012 Jeep changed the door and roof seals. They are totaly different. I have a 2008 Unlimited Rubicon. I have had the same leaking problem as I am sure we all have as owners of that vintage Jeep. All I have done up until this point is silicon the freedom roof shut and Vasalined the front top of the door rubbers.
Call cutomer service and see what they say, (be polite) Chrysler offered a three year warrenty, I hear Fiat has streached it to five years if there is somthing very wrong. Leaking roof is very wrong in my book. Good luck.

I have a 2009 rubicon 2dr soft top and it looks like this every time it rains. I love my jeep but im so frustrated that I am at the point of trading it in for something else if I can figure out how to fix the leak.

Found it

Had my wife hose the drivers side of the Jeep with me in it with a flashlight(unnecessary), top front corner of the drivers door, water was pouring in. Taking the Jeep to the dealer Thursday, see if they can find it. On a side note the carpets do come out but a couple of spots under the front seat were very reluctant, other than that the carpet is sectioned and is held down by a few snaps.

Jeepin117 My 2011 Sahara leaked yesterday during some heavy rain, the driver's side floor was soaked. Thursday I bring it in for repair and to have them fix the safety recall. Has anyone removed the carpets in an '11 Sahara? I'm thinking I should go with the rubber mats, don't want it rusting out.

redsoxx1918 I have to say that I've been very lucky so far. I have a 2010 2 door with both tops and neither top has leaked at all. The first day I looked at my Jeep on the lot, it was pouring rain. I didn't really plan it that way, it just worked out that way. So, I was able to check out the hard top for leaks.

I may trade in next year for a 2012. If I do, I'll wait for a heavy rain to do my shopping.

hey again tgates i was wondering if you could possibly give me a prodict number or a website to order the plastic stiffner for the back window gasket.. if you could do this for me,,,,i would be in debt to you...mine is still leaking and i have traced it from that exact gasket on the rear window. so if you could find out the product name and number etc. or a website as to what it looks like that would be awsome...i spoke to 3 dealers in my area here in canada, and they do not know what the hell i am talking about.. wating for your reply TGATES thanks again..

TexasJeepGuy Just got into my newly acquired 2007 X 2 door and was greeted with a nice surprise of leaking through both doors. I was planning on replacing soft top and half door tops anyway but......

Texas TC You guys have me worried now. My 2007 Wrangler hard top had over 47000 miles on it when I traded it in and I never had a leak at the top, door seals, rear glass, nowhere. Now I have a 2011 and hope I have the same results. One thing I will mention though, is that in the three and a half years I owned the '07, I never removed the T-tops. I was always affraid that would cause leaks after taking it off and on several times so I just left it in place. I have owned two soft top Wranglers and am at the age that I really don't enjoy the open top experience anymore. If I want to experience wind in my face, I just take the Harley out for the day.

I do not plan to take the top or t-tops off the 2011 so I hope I get the same dry results from the new Jeep that I got from the old one.

I will say that my 2006 leaked like it had no top at all. When I would pull it behind my RV in the rain, I would have to dry the carpets out for days after the trip because water would be standing in the floor pans.

Macnerd Looks like Im in the same boat with my two and a half week old JKU. Drivers side carpet was soaked after the first rain. I swapped out the mats for Quadratec and forgot to check them again until reading this post tonight.

Sure enough, there was condensation under the Quad mats and the carpet was damp. Not pooling, but definitely water...and starting to smell stale. Vacuumed it up, dried it with a hand dryer and hoping that it won't happen again.

Right now, I'm attributing it to the wiper unit not being bolted down until yesterday when I took it into the dealer after realizing the whole unit was loose.

I'm going to email the dealer and let him know this is going on. He was a bit of jack wagon to begin with, but we'll see how he responds. Wish me luck!

Jagrmaister I had a 98 TJ that would leave you an inch of water on the floorboards after every rain...Now that was a leak.

Jtsearcy Hey guys, I got a 2007 sahara 4 door also with the same problems..I put on weather stripping around the front part of both doors..I acutally stopped the leak. Now if rains for about a day or some i will get some small leaking but nothing like it use to be..Double up on the weather stripping. The soft top will still fit and the doors will still close with not problem..Its a cheap way to solve the problem..Good luck every1.

Swifto Mine leaks also. Last summer it started leaking like a sieve - it was fine if it was just parked, but if I drove it in the rain and then got out and checked the drivers side carpets they were soaked. I brought it in and they water tested it and drove it in the rain, and said they didn't see a leak. When I went out and checked the carpets they were again soaked (I had dried the carpets throroughly before I brought it in). I think they were actually looking to SEE water coming in, but never bothered to check the carpets. What was happening was that when I drove it, water would run up the windshield, seep through the seals, and run down along the sides straight into the carpet. So when I left it with them again, they dismantled it so they could actually see the leak. They replaced the front seals and the driver door seal. (Of course the driver door wasn't leaking, and now it is, so whatever). Anyway, the problem was mostly fixed. Now this spring, I noticed another leak coming from where the two panels meet toward the back. At first I thought it was a little drip, which is no big deal. However, I got in one day to find a pool of water in my back seat, so I brought it back again, and showed them EXACTLY where it was leaking. When I went to pick it up three days later they said they water tested it again and couldn't find a leak. Again, I checked the carpets, which I had again dried throughly, and they were damp. So then they offered to water test it with me in the car. Well, water testing with a garden hose isn't going to simulate anything but a light mist, but what happens when a torrential downpour causes a flood in my jeep? They insisted they looked at it and put the panels back on tightly, and it shouldn't leak anymore. However, now the drivers panel rattles around since they screwed with it, so I took it off again to see if I could get it back on tightly. While I was at it I checked the seals again, to get a better look. You can actually see where the seals are peeling away from the panels. I get that Jeep wants to replicate a problem before they do warranty work, but if they can physically see that the seals are peeling off, why can't they just replace them instead of making me go back every time it rains? It's been back three times already, and if it leaks again and they insist they can't fix it, I'm seriously considering filing for lemon law.

I love my Wrangler, but the Freedom Top is more trouble than it's worth.

Your best estimate on the leak in the front which fix do you think cured it...or was it cured.
So far it has not leaked in the front, I think it was coming in around the freedom top panels and running down the A pillars inside the plastic cover, I never did see any water until I found the carpet wet and pulled it back to find 1/2 in the floor.

The stiffener fixed the back, it was still leaking after a round of new seals, I took it back and that was all they done, added the plastic stiffener, no leaks since. The piece they added kinda looked like it was molded to fit, I think it came with the seals and they missed gluing it on when they replaced the seals, just my guess.

I found water in the floor on both sides in the front, coming from the seals around the freedom panels, that's what I understood from the dealer, they replaced all the seals around the top in front.

Water was puddled in the back in the jack storage and under the carpet up to the back of the rear seat was wet from condensation.

The dealer replaced all the rear seals around the back glass, wiper grommet and the rear gate and it still leaked. They added a plastic stiffener to the bottom of the back glass, it has been a couple of months and no leaks.

I did not noticed any leaks, until I got in one day this past winter when the temperature was around mid 30's and had condensation inside the hardtop behind the front seat, starting looking around and found water, water everywhere...

Mine was replaced also and the gasket at the rear wiper.

Had to go back and they installed a plastic stiffener along the bottom of the glass, they said the glass was not stiff enough for the seal without it.

Has not leaked so far.

Still leaking, probably worse since the dealer replaced the seals. I found a TSB on JK-Forum about leaking freedom top, but it does not mention the back
