Do you think going for an 8.8 over a d44 is worth it? As I can find an 8.8 for $80 at a local pick-a-part. Then shave off the brackets but I would have to have a shop weld on the new ones as I don't have the skill or equipment to do it. I have an 03 so already have disc's in the rear. As I understand the 8.8 is a c-clip axle.

|Jerry Bransford||Yes the TJ's Dana 44 uses the same type of bearing & axle retainer held in by four bolts. The Dana 30 is not a c-clip axle.|

since we are on the subject of axels when or if ever have they stopped the use of the clips on the axels i helped a buddy replace the rear axel in a 07 wrangeler unlimted which comes stock with a d44 in the rear(all unlimteds do) but it had 4 pressed in bolts behind the hub that holds the shaft,bearing all in place very nice design, was wondering on my 04 unlimited if my rear 44 is built this way an the front is a 30 clips or the new design?

|Jerry Bransford||When both rear tires are on the ground, a Truetrac works fine but when one tire is up in the air, a Truetrac (or any LSD) is pretty useless. That situation, when one tire has no traction, when a locker is the answer. A Truetrac does help on loose or muddy trails so long as you can keep both rear tires on the ground.|

|akswinehart||Thanks, Hey Jerry just curious how is the traction of the truetrac compared to the locker? I understand the difference between a LSD and LOCKERs. I do mostly daily driving but would like to have more traction off road when I want to play. I understand that it will slip if a tire is off the ground, but I guess what I'm asking is it worth the money, I just can't spend the $1000 plus on a super 35|

|Jerry Bransford||A D35c seems to hold up ok with 33" tires and a Truetrac. A Truetrac is a lot more gentle than a locker is. I ran a Truetrac & 33" tires in my Dana 35c for a couple years before swapping the D35c out for a Dana 44 & a Detroit Locker.|

|Jerry Bransford||If you don't want a locker, I would just go with the c-clip eliminator kit. While it is still a 27 spline axle shaft, it is a chromoly alloy axle shaft that is essentially the same strength as an OE carbon steel 30 spline Dana 44 axle shaft. For 35" tires and a Detroit Truetrac LSD, Superior Axle's c-clip eliminator kit would be plenty.|

dana 35 c-clip elim or super 35?
Im going up to 35" tires looking to upgrade at least my rear axle.I dont run offroad hard enough to need a locker,but do like my rear LSD in the Jersey snow.Trying to decide between a Dana44,super 35 or just a superior c-clip eliminator.The super 35 only comes with a locker,retains the weak c-clip I think,but comes with 30 spline axles.The c-clip kit can be ordered with chrome moly 27spline axles that can be used with the stock carrier.Which ones stronger between super 35 and c-clip kit?
