harleydragon okay..disconnect the battery, with an ohm meter, put 1 lead to the large post that the battery cable hooks to..put the other lead to the other big post on the solenoid..if it reads zero ohms or close to it then the solenoid is stuck closed..replace it..if it reads open then that is not the problem...............if that was not the problem then take the small wire off the solenoid coming from the ignition connect the battery cable..if it does not try to start then the problem is probably the ignition switch........or,if you don't want to go through all that you could just do the test with the small wire..if it trys to crank with the small wire off then the solenoid is most likely bad

tomjeep Thanks Harleydragon. You are always the first one to reply to my questions and youre always right haha. How do i test the solenoid? im an idiot with electricity

harleydragon starter solenoid may have welded itself closed..ohm across the 2 posts with the battery disconnected to check see if the ignition is shorted, take the small wire off the solenoid that comes from the switch and see if it still trys to crank..if it still trys to crank then it is not the ignition switch

Starter turns over when battery connected

So in my 76 jeep cherokee with an amc 360, i recently cleaned the carb and had just put everything back together and was turning it over for a long time to get gas back up to the carb (stupid i know). But i was turning it over for such a long time that the wires leading to the battery terminals got pretty hot and something happened because the motor started but the starter motor wouldnt shut off even when i turned the key off. And the engine kept running. So I ran like hell and ripped off the ground wire to the battery (burning myself in the process) and now whenever i try to reattach the battery, the starter turns over. Im thinkin its the ignition switch in the steering wheel but any other opinions?
