fenxx Yea I also want to think of the future of my jeep. I will go for 35 " one day but as you guy know I will need to regear cause even with those 33" my 6th gear (I have a standard) is useless, I burn more gas in 6th then 5th even if the engine is reving lower.

Point is I don't think we should put a 35" on the tailgate cause now we are talking of x2 the weight of the original tire.

It seems like my choice is made Lol.

Im a welder so I could probably build my own but then the hinges kit and the bracket that goes on the bumper( need to replace that fake water tank I guess) and the licking mechanism I have no clue how its suppose to be and also to make it work with the gate. Having a unlimited I don't want to cancel the gate cause then it will be a bitch to access the trunk.

Anybody builted their own tire carrier ?

fenxx Off I didn't know you would need to trim those thing down what about the tird brake light ? Just take it off? That's my plan with or without tire carrier. I heard I would need some kind of spacer/adapter for the spare to clear to light but since I'll take it of no point for it I guess.

Paul04tj I have 285/70 Duratracs on my Moab. Been on since Easter time and 15,000 miles. The gaps around the tailgate are still parallel. I just trimmed the bump stops down about 3/4 of an inch.

fenxx Umm... Lots are saying its fine and lots are saying don't do it to put that 33" on the tailgate. The tire I have is actually only ~30pnds more then the OEM tire that came with it. So I wasn't going to worry about it, but then I've reed some comment saying that the gate can be deformed from it and that not just a hinges repair so an expansive fix because some wanted to save money at first.

I will probably end up with that aev carrier. It will look sweet and I won't have to worry about it if I ever go up to 35.

ATX14 I'm running 33's on my stock spare tire mount with non problems. I may eventually go to the teraflex HD Hinge system in the future.

legitposter Half of this forum runs a 33" on the stock tire carrier... You're probably ok.

85CJ I have a 33" spare on my stock tailgate and it is fine. Doesn't rattle doesn't move. I think you will be fine with your 33". That being said, I will be adding the AEV carrier in the future when I add 35"s. Until then, other mods come first.

JeeperJake If you're a gambling type, you can run without one. If you have on board air, that might get you to a repair station.

Or internal tire goo. Or a tiny run-flat much of our Jeepster lives are not actually in response to 'what we NEED'....

spinlock I ran the AEV carrier on my '09 stock bumper initially. You can't really include the price of the spare because you need it anyway. If you mount a heavy enough spare on the tailgate you will eventually need a need tailgate.

The AEV carrier works incredibly well.

fenxx Sure its a good mod. Expensive if you consider all you can do with 1500$ in other mod but definitely I will consider it. My moab didn't come with it but its no really more expensive to get it (if you don't consider the price of the moab Lol) just looking if anyone have come up with other solution.

I know quadratec sell a hinges reenforcement kit and tire mount but its 500$ for less possibility so not worth it.

Thx for the pic it look cool !!

Wingsnut72 I think it's worth it. I love AEV combo, but I bought mine together. I used the antenna mount for the 3rd brake light. I also bought a Teraflex cb antenna mount and chopped it down so it would work with my tire carrier. I love everything about the tire carrier/bumper. Oh, I have a 33"tire also.

I have a 2013 moab and I got a lift and 33" tire on it. I find out that I can't put the same tire on the stock spare tire carrier cause of extra weight.

The moab tire carrier from aev is 900$ not including the tire itself which is 500$ and the shipping of the tire carrier. So I'm talking of a 1500$ mod maybe even more all this mostly for the look cause I don't think I'll ever use that spare...well never know. I have nitro trail grappler which are pretty resistant to anything that could puncture them (I drove over some rough sharp rocks and not a single cut in them)

What you guys...and girls, think of that mod. Worth it ? Other option ? Like a roof rack where I could load the tire but it dosent look as good.

The titre carrier from aev also come with bracket for high lift jack and cb antenna which is great.
