MouthfulOfGrass I have a whole list of snappy, smart alek answers for this, along with snide comments.

BUT

I agree with the above answers. If you are unhappy with your 4 banger, sell it an buy one with a 6.

If you absolutely LOOOOVVVEE your Jeep and HAVE to keep it, just with a bigger engine, why not go small block V8 ?

BILLG In most cases the 6 will get just as good if not better mpg than the 4.iagree with Clifford sell yours and get a 6 cyl. jeep.Bill

amerijeep The best replacement is to put the same thing in that comes out of it. That'll be the cheapest and easiest.

I will "fit", but you will need to replace a lot of other equipment under the hood... Computer, motor mounts, transmission, fan shroud, etc. It's actually cheaper to sell and buy a new Jeep (did this at one point with my first YJ). Sorry we don't have better news.

Whats the best replacement engine?

Have a 99, I-4 with manual trans. What is the best/easiest/least expensive engine swap. Will be running moderate tires, 31.5's, mostly communting, some mild 4 wd, looking for more tq/hp, long lasting engine/trans combination. Want to stay with 4 or 5 speed.

Thanks!
