Mine is a 6cyl 5 speed 88 YJ and it was the best $1500 I spent... Now for the other 7k thats all part of owning a jeep.... But the more I look around Arizona prices for older, I dont like to say old when it comes to jeep, lets just say more wordly experience.... Prices are going up like crazy out here... The whole supply and demand thing I guess..
But either way you go, just do some home work and you will be happy with which ever one you decide on.....

|bastyrsa||YJ is the only way to go, those fuel injected TJs are a pain, think of it this way u can either rebuild a carb, replace a couple 6 dollar jets, or replace fuel injectors at 75+ bucks a piece. trust us YJ guys, the square eyes is the best way to go. and if and when u do get it, replace the carb with a weber carb kit with the Holley fuel regulator, will run smoother than the fuel injection with better power, and if u dont have those smog laws rip out and bypass all emitions there not needed.|

|bergy||I like the YJ... i have an 87 so im kinda partial to YJs... i would defiantly go with a 6 either way... from my experience i would have to say that i havent heard of a huge difference in gas mileage especially with mods and people dont think the few mpgs they may get are worth the lowered power motor IMO, ... you might want to and prolly should replace the carter carb because it is crap... i like the more rugged look of the inside of the YJ too over the TJ... should get rid of those shackles tho like people stated above|

|aenima540||I like my 94 YJ, of course i have the FI not carb but i've driven my buddy's 03 TJ and I honestly like the way mine drives better, that's my opinion, and hey if it's the cheapest, that gives you more $$ to mess around with and even get a different carb or lift or tires if you really want!|

|cheapjeep71||I have both a 90 & 01. If it was me, I'd get the 2000. A lot less to mess with. Fuel injection is the ONLY way to go. Don't get me wrong; I love my square-eyes. The only problem with the 88 is that it's a carb motor & unless your mechaniclly inclined or have a friend that is; you will curse those darn computer feedback Carters. They were junk @ best & will cause nothing but problems. If it isn't now, it will later on. I'd offer the guy $2000 for it and see what happens. I bought my 90 for $3000 & have dumped that much more back into it to get it to run right.|

I have a Jeep J10 '79 truck that was a daily driver til the YJ.
I like the idea. You don't have to be a complete gear head---but you'll get a mechanic's education fast when you buy Jeep. If you are mechanically inclined to begin with all the better.
Still, if it was me, I'd buy the Jeep that performed the best in a test drive. You know why? That speaks loud and clear to how much "love" it got before you. And use the transfer case. That was my stupid criteria anyway!
And...the money you save by buying the 88 should be ready to be re-invested in the 88 when you discover thr 2-3 inevitable projectes it will need.

|paul66||I have an 88 and an 89 YJ, the 88 has the old carter carb on it and I hate it, although after unhooking all of the electric plugs it doesn't do to bad, now the 89 has a weber carb kit on it and does great!!!!! So if ya can't tell I would get the 88 in a heart beat. offer 3000- or 3500 and you'll more than likely drive it away.|

my bad... i didn't proof it after i read it. here are the "key points" you need to know to throw in an opinion.
i test drove 3 different jeeps.
1998 4cyl 5 speed. - liked everything except the power of the motor.
2000 6cyl 5 speed. - liked everything, a little pricey.
1988 6cyl 5 speed. - liked everything, seemed more rigid than the rest. more "cave-man-ish" but for some reason i liked it the best. (go figure)
Of the three i tested, i am looking to buy the 1988. (the one in the pics i previously posted). It is the cheapest of the three and i liked the way it drove and stuff better than the others. I wondered how reliable the motor will be. How problematic the carb is. Anything i should look for before making a 22 year old jeep a daily driver? thanks to all for the responses so far btw.

Few things...All things being equal.. 4.0L TJ hands down would be my pick.
That being said.. $3800 seem like more than it should be. granted prices are all over the place and there is always the person who gets a great one for 1500 or less. Its got the 4.2 carb engine.. which has a 3 miles of vac lines. Check to make sure the half door have locks.. and if they do have locks make sure the key works in them.. most left the factory without door locks. The schackles are way way to tall and thin.. Ditch those. Also if you have an issue with the 5sp pre 94 models had the internal slave unit, which is harder to work on. As always.. its your money buy what you like not what some folks on line think...

|kik||I have an 89 4.2 5spd. w/carb. and it had to be changed out once in 96,000. I'd rather deal with a carb. than a 4cyl. w/ FI. Plus, if the carb. goes bad you have a few different options whether you want to stay with the original or not. If it's running fine then it probably will for awhile. No need to touch it. If it aint broke... I think you'll like having a YJ that you can work on, etc. Whether you should buy it is up to you. Price doesn't seem out of line. My 4.2 leaks a couple of drops of oil once in awhile but doesn't burn any. My 10 Rubi might end up using more oil over a few thousand miles. A fluid change might solve the 4x4 problem you mentioned. I couldn't follow your story--it wandered. Not enough distinctions between jeeps. It was "this one" or "that one" so I never knew which one you were talking about, how many miles each rig had, and price range among the 3 rigs. I don't even know which of the three you posted pics of.
If I had any of that info I'd tell you the one in the best shape with the lowest miles I would buy.

I am in South Carolina. Just wondering what you think. The pics make it look nicer than what it is, like most all pics. But that being said, it is definitely in good shape for being 22 years old. If I get good responses from here I will probably buy it this week. This will be a daily driver, only about 10 miles each way to work, 45mph tops, so I am not too worried about that, but is this motor trouble being carburetor or fairly reliable? It runs pretty damn well right now, good response and pickup. Will it stay that way, or will it constantly have to be tinkered with? The only carburetors I know of are old motorcycles and they are a constant pain if they mess up.

|wranglerYJnewb||Actually i think that sounds like a really fair price. I bought a '93 yj with a 2.5L with all the good qualities you described above for near the same price. I think I paid 3,600 for mine. with 94K original miles. I would have gladly paid the extra 200 for a 4.0L|

Welcome to the Jeep world.
Kinda partial to YJ's, so my vote would be the 88. The 2K TJ sounds nice, but for tinkering around on something, YJ is easiest.
As far as the price, where are you? These things are all over the place price wise depending on location. Around Boston, I'd say 5k to 6k for the 88.

hello jeep community, so check it out...
I am looking to take the dive and buy my first jeep. (ya'll are thinkin,...rookie) Anyways, so far this is what I have done as far as research. In addition to pouring over the threads for hours in end and reading everything I could, I test drove a couple different models. A new one is out of the question unless one of you all want to buy it for me. lol. As it stands i test drove a 1998 4cyl 5speed all stock except it had a set of 31x10.50s BFG AT on it. I also tested a 2000 4.0 5spd, with stock tires and a 2-3 in body lift. And the last one I test drove was a 1988 YJ with the 4.2 in it. 5 spd as well. not sure what tire size, but i am thinking 31s as well on that one. All were very similar but distinctly different. the 4cyl was a complete dog. def not a huge fan of the 4banger. it wouldnt stop me from buying one, but if i had my preference it would def have 2 more cyl. I really like the power of the 6cyl and i have to say i liked the ride in the YJ the best. Just the entire feel of it vs the other 2. The one I found locally has been a southern vehicle most of it's life and has no rust to speak of on it. It has some small surface rust here and there but nothing that I would be real worried about. The vehicle has no body issues anywhere that i can find. not even a real ding in the body. Everything is real solid, floor pans are solid, frame doesnt have rust on it and the motor only has 93,000 original miles on it. The 5 speed seems to shift with ease, the 4x4 lever on the other hand is a little tough to get to slide. I figure from it being old, def wasn't used a lot from the looks of it, it's more of the "this lever is old and needs some muscle to move" than a "this thing is bent and doesn't work right" because it did slide right through the pattern, just seemed a bit stiff. The last thing is that the tires have good tread left but they are slightly weather cracked, still hold air and the guy still drives it, but I imagine I would be replacing those within a few thousand miles. Also, comes with a bikini top, hard half doors, soft uppers, and soft top. Anyways, this is about as much information as I can possibly think of to describe it. The guy is asking $3800 obo for it. What do you all think is a good/reasonable price for this thing? Is he in line or is he out of line or what are your thoughts on this diamond in the rough?
