mrcarcrazy I don't like the idea of having the winch below the front bumper (as stated by 1kooljeep it would hit everything.

I was considering one that looked more like a normal winch bumper when the winch was installed on the front, but had a sort of Quick disconnect via receiver hitch mount.

But this is true lugging 100lbs of winch from front to rear would suck...however if you made a design where the winch could live up front like a normal winch bumper you'd only have to lug it out IF you got it stuck in a manner where the front mount wasn't going to help.

of course I guess that's where having a buddy there in another jeep would come into play (to yank you out).

I love brainstorming.

1kooljeep I wheel with a guy that has a multi mount and he has to keep it in the truck. If he lets it sit on one of the receivers it hits every rock and stump he comes across. Plus humping that 100 pound winch around just sucks.

SheilaRay All very good points mowbizz... that was the thoughts I was looking for... I have never heard of a portable anchor... that may be the better way to go... This past weekend the winch would not have helped on the front.

Some mentioned to me yesterday that somehow they remove the spare and hook something to the back in order to pull that way if needed... Does anybody know what he is talking about???

One of the times I got stuck would have been necessary to have the winch on the rear...

Thoughts???

I like the idea too...but let me play devil's advocate...okay, you're stuck in slimy, nasty mud up to your body...where is your winch (with multi-mount)? Is it mounted on the front? Is it mounted on the rear? Is it in the cargo area? What if it's mounted forward and you need it on the rear? Can you imagine trying to walk through knee deep mud while carrying that winch/mount from front to rear, loaded with cable? Hmmm...okay you manage to horse the thing through the muck...oh oh...the rear receiver is just about buried in the muck too...oh crap! How the heck can I possibly mount this thing securely, get it plugged into the harness, and actually use it while standing in boot sucking, nasty, knee deep muck? Yikes! This is a worst case scenario to be sure, but it is a possibility, isn't it? How much does the winch, loaded with cable and the mount weigh?
On the other hand...your winch is solidly, securely mounted on your specialized FRONT bumper...You should be able to find an anchor point somewhere, even if it's a portable anchor you carry with you (sand anchor) and begin to get yourself unstuck...sounds a bit less troublesome doesn't it?

Like I said before, I love the idea of portability to allow the best case scenario in winching, but I don't like the thought of traipsing through all manner of muck and mire carrying a heavy object!
Just my thoughts!

SheilaRay The one I was looking at:
Warn 75330 - WARN Multi Mount Winch Frame - Quadratec

I am just trying to understand why most people don't do this... Am I missing something? Is it looks or function that would be effected by the multi-mount?

I am looking at the Warn 9.5xp and this mount.... will have to check out bumpers...

mrcarcrazy I think its a great idea. If I can hold off on buying bumpers I had a rough idea of making my own...where the winch would integrate into the front bumper and live there most of the time, unless it was necessary to be moved to the rear, then pull a pin and move it.

The Winch would be mounted on a winch plate which would have a male end of a receiver hitch attached to it.

Are there some commercially available bumpers like this? (I thought I was being really creative)
