erickpl Jeep Wrangler Seat Track Release Cable Repair

ubengineer does anyone have a video or pictures of how to do this. the youtube video has been removed

erickpl You'll want to use a cable that won't stretch. Otherwise it is as good as broken still.

AKantipodean The wire on mine broke just a few weeks ago maybe a month after I bought it, following the info from the link I replaced it. However I would add that when I ordered the part the dealer quoted $53 instead of the $25 the link claimed. If it breaks again I think I might just take some fresh bike cable housing and a cable and make my own connector for a lot less. Also some lube in the housing should make the pull easier.

That is where the S shaped terminal end had broken and I was left with just a 1/4" cylindrical terminal end. I stuffed what remained into the hole the S terminal end had been in and low and behold it held and works just fine again. Thanks for all the help!
Great info!!! Thanks

InfernoGirl Hi Godluvs... Not normal, my 01 folds and tumbles by pulling the cord on the front shoulder bolster. Sounds like someone replaced yours and connected it to the wrong release.

Godluvsugly just to throw in my .02, in my 01 wrangler the driver seat will fold then tumble just by pulling the cord or using the leaver on the back, the passenger seat will only fold then slide if i use either the cord or the leaver, however it will tumble if i use another leaver on the underside of the seat. upon inspection of the underside of both seats i have noticed that cable that connects to the tumble release is connected to two different parts on each seat, on the drivers side it connects to the tumble release, but on the passenger seat it seems to connect to the slide release (i'll add pictures tomorrow when its not dark) for those in the know is this normal?

ubengineer ok ya so after i hold the lever after folding it it doesnt tumble i have to reach underneath and pull a metal level to fold it, does any one know how all these things connect so i can fix it

It should still tumble forward if you just lift the lever on the back of the seat. You do have to help it, but it isn't hard.

I think.... since my cable is still intact (somewhat) that may make a difference. But like I said, I never use the pull on the front of the passenger seat to tumble it, so I don't know why it being intact would make a difference.

daanbc On my 00 the lever is on the back bottom of the seat. When pulled, the seat automatically slides forward and the back of the seat folds forward. After that if you still hold the lever you can push on it (seat) and it will pivot towards the front. But you have to help it after the back folds forward. By the way Nice seats! But clean up the gatoriade bottles. LOL.

ubengineer PS (i know on the newer models 01 you have to help it but thats not what im saying) right now mine is three steps. 1 folds the seat ,2 pivots and 3 slides, but im wondering shouldn't it be just two steps using 1 and 3, by pulling 1, shouldn't it fold then pivot when pulling 1. and then all i have to do is pull 3 to slide it.Attachment 16996Attachment 16997

Bobthegod Im my 99 you pull the tab to fold the seat forward, as it folds it slides all the way forward, then too tilt it you must pull the seatback forward, its a two step process, first fold then tilt.

And to fix the cable you must take the seat skin off, if you do, replace it with a heavier cable for sure.

TheTJRod The tab on the '03 moves the pass seat all the way up, the drivers side doesn't "tumble" only slides up and moves back to forward most position.
If you have trouble with getting it to move smoothly get some wd40 for the hinges and some grease for the slides. That got my pass seat moving smoothly again, use to be so bad that I could barely get it back down again. Now even my wife can move it with ease.

InfernoGirl Pulling the tab releases it, you have to help it along.

ubengineer i know that it does all 3 folds, slides and tumbles. My question is tho in order for my 97 to tumble do i have to reach under the seat and pull the lever to tumble it or is it suppose to tumble after i fold the seat by just bulling the tab on the side to fold. I dont know if what im saying is clear so to tumble do i have to reach under the seat or should pulling the fold tab allow it to tumble after it folds.

daanbc My 00 slides up, folds and tumbles with the lever on the back. Both seats.

my 99 folds and tumbles, folds, slides forward then lifts up by using the cable. If i use the lever on the bottom it just tumbles, not slide or lift

popa Does anyone know if it is simple to replace the cable? I don't have the tab anymore and I was thinking of replacing it, but not sure about the complexity and the price for a spare cable.
03-16-2010 07:17 PM
InfernoGirl Well, I have an '01, so no additional info there. But, it is called fold and tumble, since it tumbles forward. The cable that releases them will wear out eventually and break, and after looking at what is required to replace it, I'm not going there.... I just slide mine forward all the way and reach the release in the back to tilt the seat back forward and tumble it... No more wear on the release cable.... But mine still works, and as mentioned above, it is not one smooth motion, it needs assistance.

ubengineer does any one else have a different year if not a 97 maybe i can start eliminating years so right now 01-up fold and pivot together.

ubengineer i know the 01 does but im not sure about my 97 i tested 00 and up. i went to the dealer and they said they dont know but the seats are one of the things that change every year, or example i think 04 doesnt have a strap on the side to fold it has i lever. so i know 97-06 are not the same,i spent alot of time trying to figure it out and it might just be 2 seperate things so.

Beachcomber I have an 01 and it folds and pivots together but I do have to give it a little help to start the pivot.

pivoting seat passenger car seat

i have a 97 sport and the passenger seat slides up, folds and pivots, my question is when you pull the tab to fold the seat should it pivot also or is the pivoting a separate mechanism that you have to do manually, i know later years when you pull the tab to fold it pivots also when you pull it and you dont have to reach underneath and pull the tab just to pivot.
