For the record, "my" oil thread was directed more towards curiosity on the "mystery break-in oil" rather than starting a debate on which oil is best. I know that's a loss cause, and that's why I will only run Liberty Gold Plus or Bullseye Automotive in my Jeep!

demarpaint Chrysler uses no special break in oil, they use assembly lube which protects the engine when it is fired up for the very first time. You can change it at 1000 miles and switch to synthetic oil if you desire. Just be sure to use a synthetic oil that meets the Chrysler spec.

I won't touch the change the FF early or leave it in argument. I've been down that road and would rather not go down it again. But if you want some interesting reading check out Used Oil Analysis for new engines, vs. broken in engines.

exrub Do these JKs come with break-in oil? I thought all engines are broken-in at the factory these days.

That's not the question the OP asked, pumpkin. He asked this:

I didn't realize you knew all the answers already. Why did the older Mobile 1 meet the Chrysler spec and the new one doesn't?

We sell the Castrol and Mobile 1. I noticed an older bottle of Mobile 1 had the Chrysler spec on it, the new one didn't. I was going to give ESSO (Mobile's parent) a call and ask them, but got busy and forgot. Gonna do that tomorrow.

Xena1 I let them go to about 3000 miles and have had no problems. I guess a lot depends on your driving habits and time between 0 and change mileage.

Change it a 1000 miles and then again at 3000, now switch over to synthetic motor oil, and yes, 5w20 Pennzoil Platunim is as good as any. From this point on, change it at every 5000 miles, and you will be good to go..........

Moonrider I have 13 with auto and had first oil changed at 3700 miles. Went with syntetic penzoil platinum and mopar oil filter. Did it myself-was very easy.
No one is gonna tell you 100% whats right and not except you. Do what u think u want to do.

I used Castrol syntec because it's Chrysler certified (not sure why Mobile 1 isn't), and Wix filters. The 5w30 weight recommended for 2013 (changed from 2012) is really thin, but I've read of others using 10w30 with no problems.

You can change it as often as you like.

While mine is under warranty I will change it every 6 months or 6000 miles with aproved oil and use a MOPAR filter. Why give them a reason to void warranty if engine issues arise? After warranty use any quality filter you want. I like WIX too.

2resa It's your jeep so change the oil as often as you want, especially if you're doing it yourself. Costs me about $35 / oil change (Mobil 1 synthetic) and my 10 yr old does most of it. Makes him think he's the s&#t that he can do it and we get to spend time in the garage together. I'd change it every month just for that.

WallyGator215 Thanks rusty. I'm trying to avoid paying the dealer to do this stuff for me and I don't mind using factory parts and fluid either. Just looking to see what others are using and doing to their jeeps.

Wally...... You owe no one here an explanation. Some here forget that posters here may be asking info in regard to their first Jeep or very first vehicle at that. Forums like this are a great place for young guys and gals and even older guys and gals to gather info that will help them maintain and enjoy their vehicle. As for me, I don't mind reading the same stuff over and over and don't mind answering such posts..... especially knowing that somebody is truly benefiting from the forum posts here. So, Wally take the crapola replies here in stride.

I've owned over 50 cars and have never had an engine failure due to oil.
I've had new cars, and I've had cars with over 300,000 miles on them.
I always used Castrol GTX dino oil until a few years ago when I started seeing dirt/dark specks in the bottom of brand new jugs.
I use Pennzoil dino oil now because it's rated as good enough to use in my motorcycles (Oh, yeah I have small engines also) and it's cheap.

I always use the weight range specified by the manufacturer.

I used to use Fram oil filters until I changed to WIX 5 years ago.

The only cars I ever used synthetic oil in were my '95 Vette and my 2006 BMW X5, and that's only because the manufacturer started it.

I've never had an engine failure due to oil in 20 years!
(I have lost a head gasket or two)

Sorry it's a bad day for you but no one forced you to read this or comment on it. Thanks to all that did comment with something intelligent or helpful but you McGee are being a bit harsh. My first new vehicle and my only other source for info is the dealer who seems to know just as much as I do about this topic. No one on here can agree on oil or oil changes. Your new engine has 20 oz of brake in oil in it. Changing it to soon will do more harm than good but you do it anyhow.

legitposter Change at 1K because it'll make you happy and you won't think about it anymore. Then change every 5K. Don't bother with MOPAR labels. Use synthetic because its 2013 not 1975. Or go ahead and use dino oil to save money because in the end your engine will last far longer than the rest of the wrangler will.
