Yes, there's a difference. If you bolt a 231 that was configured for the 5-speed up to your automatic, your automatic will leak ATF like a sieve. That is because that kind of 231 has a shorter intput shaft that doesn't extend far enough into the automatic to seal the automatic. If absolutely necessary, you can install an extended output shaft seal (available from Summit Racing, Teraflex, Advance Adapters) into your automatic so a 231 from a 5-speed would work without your auto tranny leaking.

Juggernaut Ill probably just end up getting one from the link I posted on post #4. Can anybody confirm for me that thats what I need. Sorry, Im not too familiar with parts for my jeep even though I've had it for six years. haha

jdhallissey- Yeah just let me know what your friend says. I wont even be able to order anything until monday so well just play it by ear.

jdhallissey That is what I was thinking too. I forgot about the light- mine doesn't work lol I like it that way.

Juggernaut - I texted my buddy and I will see what he wants for his.

Jerry Bransford A YJ 231 may fit if it's for the 4.0L and for the same transmission but personally, I would not even consider one from a YJ. The TJ's transfer case was improved in several areas, enough so that I would stick with one out of a TJ.
03-19-2010 09:06 PM
ccain I'm sure it'll probably bolt up BUT... And here's the but. I'm pretty sure the 4x indicator switch on the YJ uses vacuum where as the TJ is electronic. I know the 231 has like 2 electrical connectors where as the YJ transfer doesn't.

jdhallissey i remember somebody doing it- hmm -- I also have a buddy in AZ that has the 4 to 1 kit that he wants to sell. So you would be getting a kick ass t-case with a nice crawl ratio that will work too. Let me call him.
03-19-2010 09:04 PM
Juggernaut Yeah man, If you could check that out at the junk yard for me I would be extremely grateful as long as the YJ t-case just bolts up.
03-19-2010 09:03 PM
jdhallissey Cain you know if a YJ case will bolt in without issue?
03-19-2010 09:01 PM
ccain WOW... I've only ever seen one t-case break in two. It was on a Cherokee owned by the WV Dept of Natural Resources. He was chasing a poacher and shifted into 4lo at over 60 MPH.
03-19-2010 08:57 PM
jdhallissey You can get a new one for 900 bucks.
03-19-2010 08:54 PM
jdhallissey I know my tcase will bolt into your jeep just fine. I was just screwing with you on the price because a buddy of mine wants me to buy his 4 to 1 tera low kit complete for that price lol. I think Jerry knows if the YJ t-case bolts up, if it does I can run to the junkyard tm morning, there is a YJ there I am pretty sure the t-case is still there. I would only make ya pay what is cost to buy at the junk yard and then however we get it too you. Shipping it or me driving.
03-19-2010 08:50 PM
Juggernaut Are you sure what you have is what I need?
03-19-2010 08:47 PM
jdhallissey If one out of a YJ will fit I know of a few of them in the junk yard up here. I could go look tm for ya.
03-19-2010 08:45 PM
jdhallissey I will give you mine for 700 bucks I would drive it to you for 50 bucks hehe

Juggernaut Transfer Case

couldnt find anything ebay or craigs list. Is this what I want?
03-19-2010 08:12 PM
03 RUBI Search the web for "Jeep parts recyclers" or "used Jeep parts". We have a good one here in California called J&W Auto Wreckers and they only do Jeeps. I'm sure you can find one closer to IL. though.
03-19-2010 08:11 PM
Jerry Bransford I'd first check the various Jeep forum For Sale areas, then Craigs List, then eBay. Just make sure it's for a '97 or newer 4.0L to get the right spline count, and for an automatic as the 231 has a slightly different input shaft length dimension when it is set up for an automatic.

The 231 used in a Jeep is often known as a 231J (for Jeep). Good luck, that's too bad your t-case broke like that which is not common at all. My 231 transfer case had a tough life over 183,000 miles & it held up well that entire time without problem.

And a big welcome to WF, good luck with it!

Busted 231 J transfer case

First post... wish it was under better circumstances

Hey, I have an 04 wrangler sport straight 6 automatic. Driving on the interstate today it decided to break in half so Im in need of a replacement. Does anybody know a good place online to order a replacement?

Im in the peoria IL area, and Id like to get it from someplace as fast and cheap as possible.
