|barnesry||I have a YJ, not sure how different the set up is, but I take my Supertop down and put it back up several times during the spring thru fall season, kinda why its nice to have the soft top. Windshield channel is permanent, unless you change to hard top. The plastic strip that fits in the channel goes on first and comes off last. If a new top or replace a top is easier to install the first time on a hot day to stretch the fabric. As far as the windshield channel stripping, I purchased a kit from quadratec with rivets that has worked pretty well and was fairly easy to install, just need a drill. Geoff, correct me if I am wrong on any of my above points. It is a hard fit the first few times, use the heat of the sun if possible to assist in stretch.|

I went to take a picture and answered my own question.
The bar goes throw the bow and has pins that hold it on (mine were gone). these have to be removed to let the top down, or it will hit the bars and not fold down.
question still: is there any harm in leaving the bow in the attached position vs leaving it laying down?

I will be putting mine back up on Saturday night (rain sat/sun). So I will try to report back to this thread. it came off easy, so I don't suspect it will be difficult to install.
hey Geoff, does the front/upper bow stay attached? Odd question.
When I lowered my top, the bar that connects to the top, just sits in the holes on the front/upper bow, it just fell out, like they just sat in the holes to hold it steady. I reattached the bows to the frame instead of letting them hang. no since in hanging if there isn't anything attached (IMO).
I will try to get a pic up or something.

|drgrcr74||So Geoff, can you do this with just one person? How do you make sure that the top is exactly in the middle. I would make the suggestion to bestop to mark it some how so that part would be easier. I jsut dont see how any one can do it in five minutes. It took me an hour just to get the plastic on the header the first time. I am so confused with this.|

What? Hello! Sorry, I was taking a nap.
On a TJ, the windshield channel stays on the Jeep. You do need to remove the plastic "canards" from the header in order to fold down the top.
But I'm also struggling on why this is an issue: I do this on my CJ, and it's not hard.
Frat's advice above seems sound - I'd add something like "fold fabric as you lower the top.
Try it a few times. We can do it in less than five minutes, easily.

|99TJSHORT||It's funny you guys are talking about this as I just installed the hardware on my rig last night. I'm waiting on one of these warm sunny days coming up when I can actually be off work to work on getting the soft top strected on in the sun. One question I have is how much does the windshield retainer need to be covering up the "bulb". I pushed forward on the retainer while tightening the bolts but it would not completely cover the bulb. Is the top of the retainer supposed to be parallel to the ground? Or can it be at an angle? It just doesn't look right.|

No don't leave the top in the header channel. I am not sure why you guys are having such a tough time with your top. It takes me maybe 5 mins to put it back up and that is only due to the side windows. When you pull the top up over the roll bars, bring the bows up along with it. Once you have one side in the header, pull the bows back a little placing tension on the top. This will keep the one side in the header long enough for you to run to the other side and put in the other side.
This is what I do:
Top Down instructions
- unzip and rollup back window
- unzip and rollup side windows
- undo back coners
- pull header out of channel
- lay bows down behind seat and fold top over bows and then in behind the back seat.
Instructions to put top up.
- pull soft top up over roll bars along with the bows.
- place header in channel while placing tension on the top to hold header in.
- raise bows all the way up to the lowest notch.
- tuck in back coners
- raise bows to the highest notch
- zip in side windows
I keep my bows together with tap and then there is foam that goes over that. I never take them apart.

Well, since it is going to be sunny around 80 and no rain for the rest of the week, I went ahead and pulled mine down today.
Once the windows were out and the back 'legs' were out. I gave it a little tug on one side and the whole thing came right out of the channel with ease. If yours is similar, and you plan on take the channel out, I would bet the top would fall off of the channel.
The only thing I caution against is the upper bow. Geoff would have to elaborate, but the top doesn't actually connect to the bow. The middle bar in the roof just sits in 2 holes (1 on each bow) on the top bow. when I was lowering mine, it fell out, so I just put my bows back and place with the pins holding them in.
Geoff, is that wise or not? (hey its a supertop thread and you aren't here yet? shame shame)

Ok Could I leave the top in the header channel? It would be easier for me to keep a
1/2" wrench in the glove box and just do that. Will the plastic pop out easily or is it jammed in there really good? Goeff where is your infinate knowledge and wisdom?

|pollux.troy03||I have the same one and it sucks, to take it down like pking911 said,remove side windows, take the plastic insert out from the window header channel, do not remove the window header channel, disconnect the the frame over the front doors that connect to header, pull out the frame door surrounds from the bracket on the rear fender, and fold it back, and when you put it back up pull the soft top up try to put the plastic insert back into the header... by the way is a pain in the because it keeps popping out, then pull up the frame to get tension, there is no easy way, the top sucks but it is not that bad of a price...but make sure if you think it is going to rain don't take it down because if it starts it takes to long to get it back on, or buy water proof cover and put that over your jeep, that is what i did, its faster... My jeep had a supertop on it when I purchased it recently. I had as a similar question about removing the top.
You do not have to remove windshield channel to remove the top. From what I understand, once you have the channel installed properly, I wouldn't remove it at all.
I downloaded the installation instructions from Bestop. There is nothing on how to take it down, but I suggest doing the steps in reverse. I will be testing it out this weekend to be sure.
1. take windows off
2. untuck rear corner flaps
3. remove pins? I can't confirm this step yet, but I do know there are pins that might connect the top to the window surround thing. I have felt it, but can't see it until I take my side windows off (haven't done it yet).
4. with slack from top not being connect on sides/rear, remove top from windshield channel and fold back as normal.
If this is incorrect, someone feel free to correct me. Geoff would be the one with the knowledge here.

Help Supertop owners!!!!
I just put a brand new Bestop Supertop on my 02 TJ. I had a pavement ends flip top before, and didnt really like it, so I upgraded (at least that what the salesman told me.) This thing was a beast to install, especially where the top connected to the header piece.
My question is how do I take this bloomin thing down to ride with the top off? There werent any instructions in the box on how to take it down, or how to take care of it. Do I have to take the whold header peice off? Or do I have to pull the plastic out of the header peice ( which will be crappy to have to put back in) I cant really see that I upgraded any. Maybe some insight can turn my feelings around. Please help!!!!
