activelydying finally got everything changed, the rear diff fluid was just sick looking. i did find an easy way to get to the upper bolts on the cover. just jack up the frame. with the tires still on the ground, it was a snap to get to those bolts. this may be common knowledge, but i just wanted to throw it out there anyway.

Mike001 The silicone is soft if you let it skin forst the install it it should be fine I've never had any problems .

DocG2828 Has anyone ever had any problems with a RTV getting squeezed into the diff when you put the cover back on, the breaking off and causing any problems. Seems like a silly question, but I've always wondered if this was possible with RTV. Awhile back I used RTV to seal up an aftermarket shifter add-on, and put a little too much on, and I know it had to seep into the inside of the seal as well as the outside when I tighted it up. Always made me wonder if a chunk of it could break off and cause probs.

Mike001 I just bought the hose with a cap that fit the bottle and it has a collar you twist to turn it on and off it was like 2 dollars. Then there is the funnel with that tube that fits the big jug of fluid.

hazmat clear plastic hose for fishtanks . I think mine was 5/8 od
and I got it from a tru value hardware .

I use a piece of vacuum tube - you know, the thin rubber tubing for vacuum lines. Stick one end over the pointed cap on the bottle, and the other end in the diff. Then you can hold the bottle parallel with the axle and high enough to squeeze the fluid in. The larger ID of the tube the easier to squeeze, but it has to fit snugly on the cap...

affende suction pump for filling them up ....

use the RTV, not the paper gasket

and why not way until you get the cover back on to pull the plug?

1BLKJP You can also buy a little doomahiggy that attaches to the bottle and has a flexible tube running out of it so that you don't have to try and finaggle a funnel down there.

whitebuffalo buy a fluid pump at the parts store or else buy the squeeze bottles of gear oil.....i use a pump. u can get an el-cheapo for less than 10 bucks....

Absolute Offroad The ONLY gasket sealer I ever use is Permatex "The right stuff" Yes, its expensive, but it GUARANTEES me that I wont have any pissed off customers come back telling me that the diff is leaking oil. I use it in the Caulking gun tube. As for the rear upper bolts, I suggest trying a 'u-Joint' Type adapter or a 6 point wrench. Throw those paper things in the trash.....

1BLKJP I among many others use a gasket maker called "The Right Stuff" It sticks to pretty much anything. Even if there's a little grease or oil on the surface. It's a little more expensive, but worth it.

Black gasket maker from the autoparts store is fine and, no you don't need that paper gasket.

A little word for the wise though. Before you remove the cover make sure you can get the fill plug out. Don't want to get everything drained and off and then not be able to re-fill it.

Bluesman I use the blue in a tube, some use the black.

You do not need a paper gasket, nor do you want to use one.

differential fluid change

i plan on changing my differential fluid on my 99 4.0. when i went to the auto store to get fluid and a few other parts. the guy also sold me a gasket for the front and for the rear diiferential. he also said i needed the gasket in a tube stuff. when i looked up on how to do this, a paper gasket was never mentioned, they only used the tube gasket. so my question is - do i use just the regular paper gasket or the gasket in a tube stuff or both.
