burton160w Well I actually just purchased a Rampage top and will be installing it tomorrow so I can give you a better opinion then. Viking has licensed the design to Rampage, but as a rep told me last Saturday, the companies are still working together and a sailcloth version is due to be released.

The Pavement End's comments are absolutely spot on. It's doable if you're able to rough it, but you're getting what you pay for. Extra fabric. Loose fittings. Frayed ends. If you're looking for a budget top, I've heard good things about the Smittybuilt one.

But in regards to the Rampage v Bestop, it's all up to your style and opinion. With the Rampage you do loose some headroom in the rear seat. The frameless style is different and I think a lot more aggressive. It converts to a safari top and stores the windows, a big plus in my book. The Bestop is simply a replacement top with Bestop quality. You know what you're getting is good, but what you're getting isn't very different from the regular soft top.

KeeblerKO I bought a Bestop Trektop a few weeks ago and love it. It comes with all hardware needed. No-drill header, door surrounds, and tailgate bar with brackets.

I have to give a big shout out to Bestop on improving their no-drill header. Used to be they had press fit nut-serts in them that if even slightly over tightened would spin and become useless. The new design...if memory serves correct has an improved nut-sert design (basically a normal 6 sided nut now) that is also welded in place. =)

However.... The back window is very small height-wise. I'm 6'1" and my rear view mirror is no longer useable past 10' or so behind my Jeep. That back window just comes down too low at the top on the TJ design. 4-door JKs though don't look to have this issue judging by the one I saw drive past the other day.

The Viking/Rampage tops look like they have a nice big rear window, but I didn't like the external straps out back and Bestop has been good to me.

I have to agree with InfernoGirl. Epically considering your location. SpiderwebShade is made in Orlando.
The best thing about it over the other tops you are looking at, is that you don't need any kind of header bar. You can also put your soft/hard top back on right over the top without having to remove the SpiderWebShade first. This is an AWESOME feature for when those flash afternoon showers pop up as you are trying to drive home!

I used to worry about where stuff was made at, but since most everything is made in China now days................( yall already know)
I'd prefer things made in the USA, but since their all made in China now days all I can say is don't eat it, it might contain lead.

LilBlueTank search the forum, there is a thread with pics on the pavement ends top. like previously stated, you get what you pay for. the pavement ends has extra fabric around the windshield corners and the tailgate that sags.

kg4kpg I like the Viking top and would consider it for my next top, but I sure like the sail cloth on my Unlimited. Compared to the weak think I had on my 2000 TJ, it is nice when I have to drive down the interstate and can have a conversation without yelling. But I really just with I had a hard top again.

jveno I LOVE my Viking. The way it uses the roll bar gives the top (and jeep all around) an awesome look. I love the way you can store the windows in the roof and have a safari style top. And as for noise, not bothersome at all. The only "negative" I see is that when you put it on it has to be hot out due to the very snug fit but since your in Florida I think that wouldn't be a problem... All in all, Viking all the way

Take it from me brother, YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
IMO I like the classic lines of the factory top. those tops that sit on the cage look like diapers. And not too being far from wearing them myself I don't want to look at my jeep and be reminded of it!

as soon as the top for the YJ is put into production I will give u a review.

as for bestop. I have a brand new month old bestop supertop and am not very happy with the product. but where there is some flaws in the product. the company makes up for with its warranty and service. I had some damaged parts and they quickly sent me out some replacements. but all in all a top without all the excessive hardware would make me happier

Pavement Ends is Bestop's low-cost line that is made for them in China to compete with all the other lower quality top brands. The $300 additional for Bestop's Sailcloth top is well worth it in overall quality, how long it will outlast the others, and how much quieter (dramatically) it is. Having converted from my '97 TJ's non-Sailcloth top to Sailcloth, I would consider nothing else besides another Sailcloth for any future soft top purchase.

Besides, I heard that in order to take off the viking top you need to remove it completely... is this true? If so, definitely not worth it here in Miami, FL. I change the top on my jeep more than I do my own. It's constantly on and off according to the weather.

Good luck man

Actually it's quicker/easier to work with this top....The storage for the rear and side windows is in a ceiling compartment behind the speaker bar.

Stefan Viking has best customer service.

Thor will go out of his way to help you with the top and get you replacements if you need. The company is from an Icelandic sailing company that is his fathers(they make sails and lines). The top is highly durable and very versatille...There is no other top that can match its versatillity and durability...that's just a fact.
I can tell you first hand that Icelandic sailmakers make some of the strongest sails in the world...we have regular hurricane force gail winds to deal with (I'm Icelandic)....so that canvas viking top will be made top-notch.

While I like the idea of getting rid of the top hardware and being able to store the windows with the Viking. I think I'm just too afraid of missing the sun. I got a wrangler partially because it is a convertible. So it looks like I'm most likely going the replace-a-top route.

Now another questions... I know sailcloth is the best, but I'm trying to decide between bestop sailcloth, bestop regular or something cheap like Pavement Ends for $300. If there is a huge quality difference then I'll go with the sailcloth and hopefully never have to buy a top again. But if there is a quality difference but not much of one then that would save me almost $300 that can go towards the next mod. And that's a long way towards a mod.

Thoughts from those with experience?

mrcarcrazy After seeing the Viking in person on Scout's Jeep I want it. I'd go with it.

Cons_Table just as a heads up, you may not need a windshield bar depending on how your current soft top attaches.

good point inferno. i always forget to mention that to people, since when i bought mine i had a softtop previously, so i did not need a new header, tailgate bar or surrounds. i always think of the hardware as all of the supports to hold the tops shape. thanks for pointing this out

Viking is not making the top. All rights have been sold to Rampage as indicated. A few folks on jeepforum have started receiving their Rampage tops.
