EvanCarroll Ekk, I originally wrote fuel pump, I ment to say fuel filter. The fuel filter is the suspect at this point. Has anyone else has this problem and found it to be the cam sensor though?

Big O Pete I had the same problem with my 99 6 cyl Jeep. It was the cam sensor. Took it out blew it off with air, blew air into mounting location, all was fine. Mechanic said routine problem because the cam sensor picks up a lot of dust from being mounted on fly wheel cover. It has ran fine since.

burton160w I'm no mechanical expert, but it's odd for the fuel pump to fail that early. The pump itself is located inside the gas tank and is designed to almost never need servicing until later down the line. Plus, I would think if it's the fuel pump, it's not going to start at all, or die only a few seconds later.

Problem with stalling (suspect fuel pump)

I'm having an issue with a 99 Jeep Wrangler TJ (Sahara 6cyl)

When I try to start the car it occasionally (once every week or two) fails after cranking. Upon failing, when I try to restart the car, this time applying gas it will start. However, after it starts if I let my foot off of the gas instantly it will *always* stall. If I slowly let my foot off of the gas it will however regain its ability to idle. If from the idle state, I step back on the gas the tachometer will rightfully shoot up, and then it will stall on the way down -- i.e. it doesn't learn to maintain idle state. The engine doesn't receive gas on the way down and stalls. Kicker is, if I slowly "teach" it, by stepping on the gas, letting the needle shoot and then letting it down being weary and assisting it when it is near the stall-point I can either clear the system (or computer, or whatever is the problem) and get it to start running again.

Again, this happens once ever week or two. It takes about 15minutes to complete the process. It is a real pain in the butt. Does anyone have any idea of what this is? Is it the fuel pump? Some sort of air-sensor? Clogged fuel injectors? I've seen most everything suggested on this site for like-symptoms. The key here, is after it starts working, *it "works" fully.* It only happens once in a while; and, after it happens if I slowly let it down from the start (which requires giving it gas), and then slowly let it down from revving it will work. Also, there are no symptoms at high speeds, or at driving period.

The jeep has 77,000 miles and has never had the pump replaces.
