I leave mine down unless they say the rain word, and its above 40 F in the mornings,. don't care much about a cover to keep critters out, Misty does that for me
She keeps thieves away too, for some reason a 80 lb dog is better at security than the best Brinks system available

|oranjeep||Mine was vandalized twice when I had to leave it at work, (take the company truck for night calls). I have a garage at home and 98 % of the time it is tucked away at night inside. I am paranoid about something happening to my Jeep, I not worried about the Highlander.|

I flop my top back on when I can, but I usually flip it back up at night simply to keep the dew from getting on everything. I don't have a garage so it is exposed to the elements. that's fine for some, not for me. I hate getting dressed and getting a wet ass from a damp seat, even though it hasn't rained. I live in the country so I don't have to worry about people stealing from me. If they do, it's not going to be something out of my Jeep. If I lived around others, I would definitely put my top back up over night. Even if no one is going to steal from you, they could flip a cigarette in or do something else that's damaging.
I usually will leave my top down anywhere I go, but I have had my favorite CD stolen while in a store. It doesn't prevent anything, but it does make it much easier for someone to walk by and grab as opposed to taking the time to break in. If you have anything worth much, your's will be hit first due to ease of access.
Also, Lock your consoles and glove box.

|gabeinaz||Once summer comes, the soft top comes down for good. I live in a questionable neighborhood( like most Tucson neighborhoods), and it stays outside our fence by the street. I just dont leave anything in there. When its rainy I'll put the top up and the half doors on with the skins to protect the dash from water, but the back seat will get wet and I don't care. It's a Jeep, the thing's so filthy all the time anyway; I've only washed it once since I've owned it. However one thing I always do is crank the wheels all the way left or right and put a Club on it.I had a 4runner stolen from the same spot and didn't hear it because the guys pushed it down the street before starting it. Thats my main concern with parking it outside.|

|jdhallissey||My top has not been on my jeep in like 3 weeks. Rain or shine warm or cold it is no top time for the rest of the summer! Along with no doors!|

|drgrcr74||Trail cover as long as no rain in the forcast. No carpet and vinyl seats so the cats cant do a huge amount of damage. Im not sure if there is a stereo in it or not. I can hear it if there is.|

|K.C.'sJeep||Whatever I take off during the day goes back on at night. I'm not worried about anyone stealing something as much as I am worried about cats getting in and marking. I'm considering getting a rain gear jeep cover because they are waterproof and they cover the door openings and it would keep the cats out too.|

|gth-wrangler97||I never leave anything of value in my jeep to begin with so when the weather is nice for a few days i leave the top down. occasionally it will get a little dusty but i keep a rag in the glove box just in case. But if the weather is nice then top is always down|
|04-14-2010 01:33 PM|
|chitownjp||I voted for top on at all times primarily due to dust and dirt from the city. Living in Chicago there's a lot of crap that floats around so I'd rather keep that out of the Jeep. Security's not really an issue since I don't keep anything in it. If I had a garage or lived in the burbs then it'd be top and doors off all the time, dependant on weather.|
|04-13-2010 01:43 PM|
|DontTellMeAboutCajun||I bought my '97 with a (burglar-slashed) soft top and half doors. I installed a hard top and full doors for that reason; any thief with a knife and 3 seconds to spare can still get in your jeep and steal at will...and cause several hundred $$ damage to your top in the process. I'd love to have a soft top, but not at the expense of my aftermarket stereo equip, sunglasses, GPS, etc. In my opinion, a soft top serves as a barrier to weather and wind, nothing else. I'd say it's beneficial to leave your soft top down at night for the simple fact that a burglar can simply poke around for items to loot (rather than force his way in), and leave once he realizes you've left nothing for him to steal.|

|debruins||I live in a good neighborhood and my jeep is parked where no one can see it from the street. I leave my top down if it looks clear and weather.com agrees, or sometime just latch on latch and put the doors back on, or put a tarp over, if its looking cloudy.|

|LuvMyTJ||I have a garage, but the Benz or the Escalade are usually in there, so I just throw a trail cover on it to keep out dew, animals, etc. One time last summer some kids (I assume) went through the neighborhood late one night and rifled through the cars on the street. The Escalade was out in the driveway and it was gone through... stole some change & the mp3 adapter. I don't leave anything in the Jeep, not even a dash radio. Years ago when I had a nice stereo in it, I had a motion activated alarm so it was secure with the top down. Freaking everything set it off, birds, leaves falling... needless to say, I don't use it often.|

|sjlawr||I live in a pretty safe area and leave the top and doors off all the time. I put it in the garage when I can, because you never know when one of those unexpected Oklahoma Tornados, or snow storms, will come through the neighborhood. The only thing that has ever happened to it is someone let the air out of one of my tires at work, probably an angry student|

I keep my top and doors off during the summer (so far I have), but I've had my car vandalized (pissed in by another college kid, a bagel thrown in it, etc.). While it sucks, it hasn't deterred me enough to worry. There's really nothing valuable in it, except my amplifier and subwoofer (maybe totaling $100 if that) and my head unit is useless without the faceplate (which I take in with me). Just lock up the stuff inside, and then there's little risk to worry about (have a kill switch too).
On the note of critters, I was leaving for school one morning in my Cougar and I heard a rustling in the back (hatchback), look back and there's a cat sitting there. I freaked, almost crashed the car, and pulled over to let the cat out. It ended up spraying my trunk, dropping a deuce, and clawing my back seat. That car reeked (even after numerous steam cleanings) until the day I sold it. That is a mess.

|JDsDream||I've had the top and doors off for about 2 weeks straight now. You can tell by the 4"s of pollen on the dash. Honestly as stated above, I keep nothing but a bunch of CD's (not even originals) in it and I would rather a thief be able to just look and see that there was nothing worth stealing then have them slash my top to find out.|

Mine sleeps in the garage with the top down.
Like Vanimal says its a Jeep so what I do is just I dont leave anything in the Jeep that can
be of any interest of someone else.
|04-13-2010 10:44 AM|
|Vanimal00000||I leave mine off at night, when possible, and never lock it. Just remember, it's a Jeep and if they really want in they'll get in. That's why, like so many, I don't leave anything valuable in there as stated above.|

|woodsballnc||Out here so far I've left my top off cept for the bikini. Critters I don't have to worry about our dog keeps them away as for security i have a tuffy lock box with my stereo in it so again im not worried. Dumb criminal trying to unbolt the box + Dogs Barking = 10 guage to the face.|

I'm a slow learner as well....back in the day I was at a buddies house in my old convertible. a cat came by and marked my seat as his....
That smell never really came out all the way (on humid days I'd get a reminder)

If I lived in town, I would definitely close it up at night.
Living out in the boondocks like we do, I still like to close it up at night for a couple of reasons.
First, it keeps the critters out, Cats can really make a mess in your rig. They will spray the interior to mark their territory and the smell is nearly impossible to get out. Where we live we have coons and possums too.
Next, it keeps the dew from settling on the interior of your vehicle. Moisture combined with the dust and grime can make it difficult to keep clean. It makes it stick really well to fabrics and some electronics don't like moisture.
I try to put my top up at night just to be on the safe side. I don't always buckle it all down, just flop it up and Velcro the side windows on.
