89YJproject so whts the easiest way to fill the Trans?
04-16-2010 02:36 PM
whitebuffalo i put 4 quarts of pennzoil synchromesh in mine last night. spec is 3 1/2 qts but i filled through the shift tower

atf+4 for the tcase. i think it held 1 1/2 quarts.

75w90 is fine for the ax5 if you can find any non gl5, which i dont think you will. as mentioned, the gl5 eats brass synchros.

i dont recall the size but i will look tonight if i remember, since its still laying under the jeep.

djl7780 For the ax-5 tranny, redline mt-90 is supposed to be the best. Just changed mine with redline and shifts/feels great. I used ATF for the transfer case..

jpdocdave any atf in the t case is fine, but do not go by the specs at the store, or in any manual on the trans fluid. it will say regular 80w90 gear oil, gl5 is spec, and every manual is wrong. gl5 eats the brass parts inside the trans and causes failure. use any synthetic 80w90 that is good for brass synchros, penzoil synchromesh, or royal purple are good choices.

AzTJ Castrol, Mobile, or Royal Purple*

Royal Purple is a high performance brand, very good stuff... but a bit pricey.

89YJproject is there like a good brand to go with?
04-15-2010 07:16 PM
AzTJ AX-5 yes... which oil, not sure. If you call up your local parts store (NAPA) they should have the specifics. It's either going to be a specific weight gear oil or it could be ATF. The T-case I know for sure uses ATF, any kind. Not sure on capacity though. Just drain it, and fill it till it drips out the fill hole a bit.
