90 is the cheapest year for an AX15 swap into an 87. You'll need bell housing to T case, including skid plate, shifter/brackets, etc if you can get them. That way everything just bolts in, you don't need to modify driveshafts, etc. You can even reuse your clutch if it's in good shape, tho a new one is cheap insurance.
You might have to change the pilot bearing (it seems to vary somewhat), but I didn't absolutely have to on mine (did anyway).
I was able to score the whole shebang for 250 + clutch & small stuff. Probably had 400 total into the swap and it's been shifting great for 3+ years.

|harleydragon||yeah,87 and some 88's had the ba10..I prefer autos but for a manual find an ax15..get trans,t-case and driveshafts if you can..then resale what you have left over|

|OregonPlinker||Auto or manual? I think those ones had the ba10 or something like that for the 5speed and those arent worth putting money into. You want the ax15 for a 5 speed. So an upgrade swap would be the choice there. The auto Im not sure about but I think its a TF999. Thats what I have in mine and I like it a lot. I actually just got a built one for a back up when/if the stock one fails... Either way swapping in a wrecking yard tranny is gonna be a lot cheaper than having one rebuilt. Assuming you do the swap yourself...|

Tranny going out
Have a 87 YJ tranny going out. Would it be better to rebuild or swap it, What would be best up grade? 4.2 On a budget
