Spine of God I bought a bumper with a tire carrier. The 33 was squeaking and rattling on the stock spot on the tailgate. My Jeep came without a rear bumper, so I had no proper recovery points. My cross frame was bent a little from the former dude using it to recover at some point. So I beat it straight and we just welded the bumper to the Jeep. With the receiver, I can put the rack back there and carry extra stuff too. The one I chose is a direct rip off of Smittybuilt, but waaaaayy cheaper. shipped.

I had to widen the slot for the release handle, drill a hole to drain water out of the back of the catch, slot the holes for the tire carrier, took a dead blow to assemble the top part of the tire carrier. . . No biggie.

bumper/tire carrier I bought

Smittybuilt's exact bumper, but with only a 2 inch receiver, not rated for towing. lame. The one I chose has a class III receiver. not lame.

dreamzx93 I just got my tire carrier in and thought it was a good idea to use gasket maker so it wouldn't hold water or be metal to metal and possibly rattling

Neil F. I've had a 33 12.5 on my stock carrier for over 6 years. No issues.

Apoc1528 I have a 33X12.5 spare on the stock swing. When I close it, it hits the stock bumper just a bit. Gotta give it a good push. Seems as if bumper holds some of the weight. No problems with my swing in the last year and a half.

Water Dog If you don't like the hockey pucks, you can do the same thing by using a second set of the factory type bumpers (available at Quadratec) then cutting the round end off to whatever length you need to make extensions.

They stay pretty much hidden behind the tire. The hardest part was finding a long enough bolt to use that still had a small enough head in order to use a ratchet on.

You can see some of the hockey pucks I used in this photo. You can also see the 1" pvc sections I used to raise my 3rd brake light.

CJChet I use this method on my CJ7, you might look into it! Cheap and easy.

BLK00TJ My 33 has been on there for a few years with no problems. I do have aftermarket hinges though. I used hockey pucks to space the rubber bumpers out further.

dreamzx93 Is there a place to get a kit to extend bumpers? I just got the rugged ridge carrier.

DavidW954 I don't think a 33 spare will even fit on a stock carrier because it hits the stock bumper. Mine didn't fit, at least with a 15x8 wheel with 3.75" backspace.

I've got the Rugged Ridge HD carrier, but the most important thing is making sure that you extend the rubber bumpers on the tailgate that push against the tyre when it's mounted. They are fundamental in keeping the tyre stable and take a lot of the load off the tailgate. It's not really a weight issue. My 33" tyre on an alloy wheel is only about 11lbs heavier than a stock steel wheel and tyre.

dreamzx93 if you use the stock one do you have to put some spacers back there to keep it from moving around.

Eckoh I have an exogate and highly recommend the product. I have yet to find anyone who owns one that is unhappy with it.

Barmanvarn It's not the size but really it's the weight that matters. I ran 33x12.5x15 with no probs for a year.

Upgraded my carrier when I went to 35s last month.

Digger84 If I did not already have a swing mounted to my steel corner armor I would consider exogate as you get support without extra hassle when opening the rear gate

Water Dog I've had my 33 on one of these carriers HyLine OffRoad 300200100 - HyLine OffRoad Oversized Spare Tire Adaptor Bracket for 97-06 Jeep® Wrangler TJ & Unlimited - Quadratec for the past couple of years without issues. I think 33's are the biggest that is recommended for the tailgate though.

I have a 33 12.5 15 spare on the way and heard the extra weight can put a beating on the tail gate. I've heard of 33's bending tail gates. Is this true? Is there something I can do to use the stock carrier to keep this bending/stress from happening? Is there a simple carrier I can buy that does not cost a lot that will keep it from getting beat up?
