|Kohrs93||2.5" RC suspension lift. I've heard nothing from good from it. Costs about $450 if you install it yourself, which isn't hard but can be a pain in the batootoo with the bolts.|

|TheTJRod||TJ's use a hydraulic jack. It really doesn't matter what type of jack you use as long as it can lift your tire off the ground.|

Our YJ's used a scissors jack that cranks up. Located on the right front fender well inside the engine compartment (stock location).
Sounds like you're on the right track.

|andreafahy01||All of this talk of wheels and tires and I have yet to address with myself the issue that I do not have a jack or a tire iron! Eek! I think I'll check around on craigslist and maybe post a wanted listing, any car I've ever owned each had a different jack, are there specific jacks per vehicle model?|

|TheTJRod||I must have been looking in the wrong area as the cheapest I found was over 600. Sounds like you're looking in the right place to find a good lift. A SOA kit puts the spring pack above your axle instead of below it(stock setup) effectively giving you more lift. There are more benefits but I am unsure of them all as I have coils.|

Cool, yeah I was thinking a 2.5" lift would be adequate. The 4" lifts looked like too much for me. I don't think I have much need for larger tires, etc. anyway but I really don't have a clue what I want/need. it's my every day ride, but I'm sure I'd play off road if it was better equiped for doing such. I kinda happened upon this Jeep, we had an old broken Tacoma and the man that was going to repair it wanted to trade for his Wrangler. I said hell yeah!

It seemed good to me but again, I am clueless about these things! But then if I have to pay someone to do it, yeah, the price will climb. I honestly don't understand most of what you typed but I'll keep reading, reading, reading and eventually I know it will all fall into place.
I'm wondering too about the other thing you mentioned, the SOA kit. I totally need someone cool with Jeeps to be here with my jeep and tell me what's up!

Just some ideas
Spare Tire mount. $50
3rd brake light $15
Rear bumper with tire carrier. $360
For your lift you definatly don't want to go higher than 2.5" as any bigger and your tires will look real small and you will have to get so much more stuff to get your Jeep running smoothly. SYE(slip yoke eliminator) and new drive shaft/ or transfercase drop Bigger tires, regear axles or stronger axles, better brakes, stronger steering linkage. The list goes on but I think you get it.
I have a 2.5" lift with 33's I have a tranny drop of about 1/4" to get the vibs to go away, all Jeep's are different so you won't know how much you can lift without getting vibs till you actually do it. Also most lifts come with the tranny drop so you can always install it at the same time and probably won't get vibs to begin will. Oh I rattled on too long(what happens when your finished with your work load for the week and have nothing better to do!). What size tire do you ultimately want to get to and what do you use your Jeep for? I really do think you would be happy with a 2" or 2.5" lift. Man YJ lift kits are expensive! You should wait till the YJ'ers come out and recommend some lifts to you.

Quadratec is a great place to find what you want as their selection is unrivaled but most just find what they want on there then buy someplace else as Quadratec's prices are high and there shipping is a joke. Not to mention that I have heard a lot of customer service problems with them.|

Funny, I hop on today for tips on what to do with my spare tire and now I'm researching lift kits =) The Rough Country 2.5 and 4 inch lifts seem to have good reviews on the forum and the price of the kit seems good.
Yeah, Greg drives a Wrangler also... a JK and he's not so mechanical... I'd totally dig working with someone on it, I think it would be cool to learn how to be handy with my Jeep. The off road group sounds like a super idea. We're in eastern NC, Craven County area if anyone knows of a group!

Practically all bumper mounted tire carriers swing out to provide access to the tailgate in some way. Make sure it says it has a frame tie in kit, 31's should do ok but any bigger and you will want it.
Lift kits can get very pricey very fast, especially if you have a shop install it. You say your husband has a Jeep. I am sure he wouldn't mind helping. Also check for an off road group in your area they usually have wrenching parties to go work on peoples rigs. Normally for a case of beer.

So if I understand correctly, the rear bumper with tire carrier is able to support the extra weight of a larger tire. Does this swing out to allow the window and tailgate to open?
So far as a lift goes, all I think of when I think of lifting my jeep is "that sounds like fun!" I have no clue what is involved in that. I'm happy to learn to do some basic things, but that's the sort of job I think I'd let someone else do. Maybe I should look up a basic thread on lifts?

I would suggest either a rear bumper with tire carrier or just getting a stock on from a junk yard and spend the extra cash on a lift, or even just new springs.

Hi Chris, I've been wondering about exactly this. I do have to open the top hatch before I can open the tailgate so I guess I shouldn't even bother looking for a stock carrier.
But if a swingout bumper mount were to be installed, in order to get in the back I'd have to swing out the tire mount in order to open the hatch and tailgate.
if I used the stock tire carrier I will free up the space inside my vehicle but my back hatch/gate will be useless.

I ran into an issue with the new hard top and had to remove my tire carrier. I plan to re-work something with it just not sure what yet.
IF you have to open your hatch first in order to open your tailgate, the stock tire carrier WILL NOT WORK! Trust me... There is no way to open the hatch with the tire in the way and you cannot open the tailgate with the hatch closed.
We must go with a swing out bumper mount or something entirely different.

another option, granted a more expensive one would be to install a new rear bumper with a swingout tire carrier. Again much more expensive.

Not sure on years but 93,94,95 yj had a
rear brake light that came up off that rear tire carrier
But like Distorted said lots of people up grade this
tire carrier so they put the old one in the garage
now its cleaning time so you can find them for sale
on craigslist and such
