ALWAYS GET THE WARRANTY!!!! And, if you can afford it, extend it!
Quick story: I buy my Jeep in 2001 and get the 7/70K. I end up changing jobs and train to work every day for 2 1/2 years. I put 9K on the Jeep in that time frame, I kid you not.
Change jobs and start commuting. 3 days before the warranty expires, my rods go. I take it in to the dealer, he doesn't believe it's still under warranty. Checks the numbers, checks my warranty and it is.
The look of defeat on his face was priceless....

|Bobthegod||Hey don't forget you can deal the warranty price also. Just cuz they say it costs ****.** doesn't mean you have to pay that. Jew'em down they'll deal I'm sure. Go with the original warranty then have them add on the extended after the ending date of the first. Also.....whomever you've financed with (if you did) will also have extened warranties available much less. Don't forget to call your states Attorney Generals Office and tell the name of warranty company to see if they are having any problems with them......a call worth it's weight in gold. They will also have the name sof warranty companies to stay away fromand those that are also worth purchasing from. Eithe way Good Luck.....I didn't buy the warranty and have 106,000 and only replaced an alternator at 102,000 for $110.00 not bad I think.|

|biffman||OK, since we are talking new purchase here I've got a question for ya'll. I'm picking up my new jeep next week (no, I won't purchase the extra warranties) but I do want to know what you would recommend for some easy first mods? It'll be a 2010 Unlimited Sahara, fun for the whole family, and I don't want to be mistaken for a soccer mom (and since I'm a guy, that would be pretty devastating). What are the best ways to lose my virginity so to speak on mods?|

|InfernoGirl||If you still feel the need for a warranty, check with your lender. Mercury has a good one, it's not really cheap, but it covers everything (exc. wear items). I didn't buy one with the Jeep, but I've had two others and they were great. Worth the $. And if you sell before the term is up, they refund the unused portion. Dealers make a pile of $ on aftermarket warranties, that's why you want to check with the lender, they sell the same ones, but that's not where they make their $.....|

|chef1231||I would get number 1 myself. There is not enough options on that Jeep to need anything else but.... Unless you know how to fix your jeep if you do have a problem... Lets look at it this way.. Dealerships charge $95 an hour and how much would a new tranz cost?? Small price to pay if you look at it like that. Just check the deductible and make sure it is not more then $100 and if the company is Zurich then thats a good one. I would be then again I'm not buying the Jeep|

Jp90, just be sure to check EVERYTHING in the drivetrain..every seal, everything. Make a list, and then have the dealer submit it for warranty. They can tell you ahead of time whether it's covered or not.
And then argue with them if they say no. Argue nice, but argue. It's worked well for me.

number 3. if you break it offroad they'll give you static. i've seen it. also i've seen warranties get tossed because of mods. those dealers look for any excuse to make you pay. odds are if you get a warranty, you're still paying for the repair.
no warranty + learn to do your own repairs = more $$$$ and freedom

|Jp90Talon||Well I just got off the phone with a Jeep dealership. I can transfer the remaining 7/70 over for $150 and Im good until May 2011. I may just do that since $150 isnt bad.|

|bergy||i would say 3 also... like stated before you wont get your moneys worth out of the other 2 and they will take your money and try to screw you over if you have a problem with it... and if you change anything it will void the warranty im sure so mods will be out of the question for 3 years and thats no fun|

Strange, I bought my 04 LJ with 44000 on it in 2008. Went to the dealer and for $150 they transferred the original 7/70,000 warranty. Already had a cracked manifold replaced and some seals replaced under warranty.
I'd check on the original warranty again.

New purchase advice needed asap!
Ok well im heading up tomorrow to finish up signing all the papers for my LJ. It is an 05 with 43k miles on it so all original warrenties have expired. It comes with the usual 60 day 2500 mile warrenty but that is it. They are offering several packaged 3yr 36k mile extended warrenties but ofc I have to buy them.
Main options are.....
#1 -3/36k drivetrain (motor and tranny) $1741
#2 -3/36k bumper to bumper (except noral wear and tear items like clutch, wipers, brakes ect) $2377
#3 - Screw it you are buying a jeep and they are invincible! Plus if something is going to blow up it'll happen in the 1st 2500 miles!
