|Rawkon||its because you live in washington. put some vasoline on the area that gets corroded after you clean it. it will help. A friend in oregon has the same issue. he went to a gel battery and no more problems. problem with gel it the $$.|

no idea on the wires, you'll have to trace 'em through to the other ends.
Make sure when you clean it that you use baking soda and water to dilute the acid. An old toothbrush, sprinkle baking soda, spray a little water and scrub 'er down. Or like these guys said, get a new battery. If it is more than five years old, replace it.
Take a quick look and check this, when I had a similar problem my battery cable was loose at the starter side. Can't hurt matters any to pull on it and see if it moves...

Step two: if problem persists, get battery tested and (most likely) replaced.
Step three: figure out why your battery is corroding everything up. How's your charging system doing?

If you dont have corrosion it sounds like your loosing your battery.
you can get it load tested for free at most auto parts stores.

first off ive got an 02 4.0. so before i left to go to MI for work i asked my dad if he would drive my jeep once a week so the battery wouldnt die and so it wouldnt be sitting on the same spot on the tires. fast forward two months and im back home. my dad says he drove my jeep once a week. i go to start it up and click nothing happens. i try to jump it and it wont start. the gauges started jumping up and down and it started making a beeping noise. i reconnect the cables and still nothing. so i start disconnecting the the battery and notice a set of wires running to the positive and negative on the battery. the black wire is hooked up to the negative and the red is broken off of the positive. so i strip the wire back and wrap it around the post and reconnect everything. i jump it and get it running and let the battery recharge. the next day i have to jump it once to get it started and it was good for the rest of the day. fast forward a week and everything is good still. so yesterday i drive out to seattle to see a friend and when i go to leave my jeep wont start. the gauges start jumping like before so i figure its the battery. i start disconnecting everything but notice that im getting spark off the battery when removing the negative connection. so i crimp on an eye to the red wire that i had wrapped onto the positive and everything works out just fine now. my uncle said he thought that the wires running to the battery were some kind of fuse. a friend thinks it might be a factory installed alarm. i tried tracing the wire back but it runs into the firewall. so does anybody know what those wires are for? also while on this topic when i disconnected the battery the first time i wire brushed all the corrosion off the posts and fittings and when i popped the hood yesterday it looked like i hadnt even cleaned anything. does all that extra corrosion mean that the battery is going out?
