Well, it all depends on HOW DEEP the water/mud is
If you use the clutch in 2' ++ mud--"ADIOS CLUTCH"
Now Although I've never done this in mud, there is a possibility of running thru a creek 2' +++after the mud and flushing the disc with water/clutch use (in the water), but
As soon as a Green peace/Sierra Cub member here's about that--OhOh-OhOh

I thought I read the manual from cover to cover but I missed that one. Thanks folks, that will definitely come in handy.

Nissan Xterra had thE same sys, called clutch cancel (button) to use on hill,IF ENGINE DIED, so you could still keep one foot on brake and one one gas--
This all doesn't detract from the instruction that ___
NEVER operate the clutch while in deep water/mud, because it'll allow water/mud to penetrate the clutch disc and "RUIN IT"--

Hope this clears it up. Four-Wheel Drive Models Only:
In 4L mode, this vehicle will start regardless of whether
or not the clutch pedal is pressed to the floor. This feature
enhances off-road performance by allowing the vehicle to
start when in 4L without having to press the clutch pedal.
The “4WD Indicator Light” will illuminate when the
transfer case has been shifted into this mode.

Actually you will love the feature if you rock crawl.
Have you ever been pointed straight up seeing nothing but sky. Where you are on the verge of flipping all the while afraid to roll back several feet to loose the progress you've just made if you press the clutch when it all the sudden stalls?
Been there, done that. Press the clutch and you roll back or worse the released tension makes you bounce. Start without pressing the clutch and you don't. Saved my butt at least a couple times.

If the jeep is in mud I don't know how effective starting it with the clutch engaged will be at keeping crud off of the clutch. My question to the folks reading this thread is will water and thus, dirt infiltrate the clutch easily or would it take time for it to get in there? If it takes time getting in there, then not sitting in the mud for too long is advised. If the jeep is stuck in the mud, then getting pulled out will certainly take time. By that time, would the clutch area be wet and if so, how would one go about cleaning it out with fresh water?
So, basically, what maintenance issues are there with the clutch if you think it has been infiltrated with mud?

|jk'n||To answer the title of the post, I'm guessing that putting the clutch in would allow abrasives in between the clutch and pressure plate causing excessive wear afterwards.|

|jk'n||That would work. I've started cars in first, even three speeds that had a broken clutch pivot fork so that I didn't have to call a tow truck. Driving it to the service station can be accomplished even shifting without the clutch both up shifting and down shifting. Approaching traffic signals slowing down to avoid stopping so that the engine doesn't have to be restarted while in gear. It can be done. I've driven up to 40 miles like this.|

What is the purpose of no clutch starting in 4 low
I know if the transmission is under wanter, you don't want to depress the clutch. But, my question is, how would you take off? I'm guessing you just put it in gear, and as your cranking the motor give it gas so the minute it fires up it takes off? I was just curious in case I ever find myself in this situation
