Just to be clear, the "hot oil" message does not refer to your engine oil. It refers to your transmission "oil" (fluid).

If you're bone-stock, let Jeep install a bigger trans cooler under warranty. Others have done it.
If you have bigger wheels/tires/gears/etc, they'll fight it.

The bigger trans cooler will then be included in your warranty.

Crossfab I have a 2011 unlimited rubicon with 8,000 miles. We were two hours from home at a baseball tournament it left us stranded. Temp outside was 92 degrees after coming back between games we parked and left it running for less than five minutes and the e fine shut down showing hot oil. Engine never would attempt to turn over. Even after two hours. I did disconnect the battery trying to trick the computer. Ended up calling a wrecker and catching a ride home. It is now at the dealer and we will see what will happen. Jeep is totally stock and was not overworked. I love the jeep but if it can't stand up to city driving what's it going to do when I take it to Colorado in august and put bigger wheels and tires on?

Blackbeard1718 THANKS, Bill, Cane & Jim!

Oh I just turned mine off completely. I love driving without it.

JIMBOX AND, if you're in 4hi--immediately switch to 4lo and the auto temp will immediately drop, up to 30 °

cane75 Mine is wider, covers most of the radiator from side to side, but slightly shorter (top to bottom) than the one in your picture. But in any case I think the cooling area is probably about the same.

cane75 You get a message where the odometer reading normally shows, that flashes quickly along with a chime that rings as the message flashes. The message says "hot oil". If you get this scenario, put into neutral and rev the engine a bit and it will stop in a few minutes. Or turn the car off for about 15 mins. In any case if you see this message it says whatever you were doing in 4 wheel drive, you should reconsider doing it again unless you get an aux tranny cooler, unless catching fire and blowing up in your jeep sounds like a good thing to go do.

chimes ring and the odo reads "HOT OIL".
flashing and ringing, flashing and ringing ---- as if to shout at you a warning of your impending spontaneous combustion.

I'm thinking of opening a file with the NHTSA on it to cover myself. That warning beep is unnerving.

I have been out on the beach regularly for past few weeks, and no warning light, no smell, nothing, the Jeep is working the way God meant it to be. I have used in both 4H settings and it doesn't make a difference. So my conclusion, if you have an automatic transmission and you are going to do any type of serious 4 wheeling in sand, get this thing before you blow out your transmission. It works!

GroundHawg I know. it makes sense. crap I'll need to call them tonight. I don't know why they'd send me another letter about it. I'm doing the flush and cooler in about 5,000 so I need to find out
07-08-2010 09:15 PM
JIMBOX So far there's only been one recall for the tranny and thats J30, which "flashes" the ECM and puts that idiot light on the dash, for "HOT OIL",but

is there a new recall on the 42RLE? I just got a letter in the mail today involving hot trans oil. I already got one letter warning me that the trans is junk, but this one is talking about a recall on the oil itself. I'm lead to believe ATF4 is no longer the spec or advised fluid. anybody else get a letter like this? I figured I'd ask here than call those sh*theads at the dealership.
it also allows the xmission to go "limp mode" and shut you down, no matter where you are !!

I haven't heard about anything wrong with plain ol ATF-4, but it wouldn't surprise me, that Crysler is looking for more ways to handle the auto's heat !!

JIMBOX I don't understand that, the aux coolers are phenomenal, but

Since your jeep is leased--there's nothing you can do anyway !!

silvrevo I just googled Tranny Cooler,,, and I wasnt pleased with the results.

And yes I stole this line.... But its soooooooooooooo good!

CruserBruiser ^^^^ my initial thoughts exactly, I did want to consult the forum to see what others were doing... Thanks bro!!

GroundHawg all it is, is a flash that makes a retarded light come on. I didn't get it, nor do I plan to. it still gives you a warning without it. you'll hear a ding like the gas light came on, but you'll be like "huh? what was that" but now you know.

a recalled part the dealers can't deny service on. they might see a modified jeep and flag you for future service though through warranty. but if it comes to that, they'll see your jeep anyway.

if you want it don't let that stop you. a lousy light isn't worth my time or fuel driving to the dealership.
