|neauxLAjeep||Ok, so the rattling is def coming from the driveshaft, when I engage 4wd it stops, but then makes a high pitch whistling noise which is very weird. Also, what on the driveshaft could cause that much rattling when in 2wd but then go silent when in 4wd? something loose in the transfer case? or does it just need new U-joints?|

Tick sounds like lifter to me.
Rattle sounds like something is in the front diff....but that's just a guess...or maybe a bearing has self destructed. I'm really not sure. its really hard to say for sure. also check all the u joints.
To rule out t-case linkage, remove it and see if the noise goes away.

|2003wranglerRHD||sounds like front universal man i'd change those out and try that the vibrating is coming from that front ds. sounds like a lifter tap in the top end!!!!!!!!!|

|neauxLAjeep||Also, the rattling has been happening since I got the jeep (my fault to just test drive around the neighborhood). I would say it happens more than it did last june when I got it, but its basically the same problem. it hasn't adversely affected anything else on the jeep, at least i think, so that, to me, would point more towards the t-case shift lever bushing wearing out... thoughts????|

|neauxLAjeep||good idea man, im gonna try that next time I can. anyone on the rattling? has anyone changed the bushing for the t-case shift lever with the TSB part from jeep? if your rattle sounded like mine, then it may be just that. some forums i read in the past about that TSB, people said it was a loud clanking of metal, but some said it was more of a thump, so i dont know. anyone had this problem with the same sound, used the tsb, and had it work?|

If you drop it in 4wd does the front DS still have as much play?
The ticking frequency certainly increases as you accelerate. What if you get up to speed and then hold the clutch down. If the ticking frequency slows down (but not the vehicle) then I would say it is internal to the engine. If the frequency stays the same, then it has gotta be part of the rest of the drivetrain (DS, t-case, wheel hub, etc).

#1 - checked, it's not the fan hitting the shroud
#2 - when i was parked and showed the play in the front DS, it was not in 4wd.
and the tick is for sure from the engine compartment, 95% sure its from the engine itself. in person you can easily tell, thats why i tried to get a bunch of footage for y'all.

Hard to tell direction and whatnot from the video (to try and localize), but:
- part 1 -- possibly the fan hitting the fan shroud?
- part 2 -- maybe its me, but it kinda looks like the front drive shaft is vibrating. When you were parked and showed the play in the driveshaft, was it in 4wd? I'm thinking that your front pinion gear may be a little loose. This may cause the vibration, the tick, and the play on the driveshaft. (just a guess tho)
- part 3 -- if I remember right, the amount of play in the 4wd engagement arm can be adjusted. Might check that.

Ticking and rattling, but it's all on video... help!
Ok. So two things:
#1 The common tick from the engine, but from what I've read it can be different things depending in the tick. The tick you can hear throughout most of the video.
#2 Rattling. After reading many forums, i believed this mysterious rattle was coming from the bushings where the transfer case linkage meets the linkage bracket. But the description isn't quite the same to the problem I am having, as the rattling only happens in 10-15+ mph, but is not limited to only bumpy roads (as a lot of people with this issue have said), and doing anything with the t-case lever doesn't stop or start it (as many people have said). Although the amount of rattling changes for some reason, i have never found any particular interval or situation that it occurs, just random. The rattling is also much faster at higher speeds, but as you can hear, the clanking doesnt happen in any set tempo, it just sounds like loose metal slapping against some other piece of metal.
1st part of video = just engine compartment for tick
2nd part of video = driving around with my camcorder zip-tied on a control arm to hear the rattling
3rd part of video = inside my cab playing with the t-case lever
