Since you seem to have an open mind about the choice, its possible the available Jeeps with the options/color you want will make the decision for you as to Manual or Auto.

Manual transmission is completely automatic for me. People complain about driving a manual in traffic, but it doesn't bother me because I don't even think about it.

Also, make sure to test drive both. On my last car, there was a dead pedal to rest my left foot on when not in use, which made it comfortable. When I test drove a manual jeep, there was nowhere for me to rest my foot at all. I had to put my foot under the clutch, which wasn't comfortable and didn't seem safe.
In the end, though, it is definitely a personal choice. Weigh all the different pros and cons of each and see where that gets you. Good luck and happy jeeping

I'm not sure of what all the concern is about stalling and rolling backwards with a standard vs an automatic. When mine is in 4 low and I'm nearly vertical a$$ up or down doesn't matter...but lets start with going up hill...I almost have to try and stall it. With that much torque, coming off the clutch to the pressure point and then some the jeep practically lunges forward when the brake is released and going down hill again coming up on the clutch to the pressure point, and engaging as I come off of the break, there is no lunging forward, it just moves down the slope at a steady pace. I don't see what the concern is about. Granted learning how to do this and doing it right every time especially when making a mistake can be costly, requires practice. With both a standard or automatic you shouldn't be out on difficult trails the first time out wheeling. I think wheeling is something that grows on you and being able to take it one step at a time is more enjoyable than getting your nerves in an uproar the first time out.
The choice between automatic and standard has more to do with utility than feelings about either. Who the jeep is intended for may have as much to do with the choice as what you intend to do with it. To try and keep it as simple as possible, the more you intend to push the jeep towards its outer limits with regards to capabilities, the more useful that the standard becomes. It allows more control under varying conditions. Some folks just want simple carefree driving and for most that means automatic transmission....its easy and you don't have to do a lot of thinking about gears and clutch because gears, levers, wizbang, and the computer do all of that thinking for you.
When your driving habits with a standard become so automatic that you never have to think too much about what to do in a particular situation, then you have probably mastered the standard to the point that having a standard jeep is a no brainer. If your spouse or significant other is not on board then you may just have to throw yourself on the sword and buy the automatic. That would be tough for even me to do...and upset my wife in the purchase of a vehicle that she would want to drive as well but only in an automatic. This choice can surely be a difficult one. I hope you get the right one for you in your situation.

If you are off-roading, you are doing in for the excitement and the challenge. Why not add the extra challenge of a manual transmission. You could say, "Yeah, you and I both made it up over that hill, but I did it in a manual!"
I have a manual transmission in my Jeep. It's also my daily driver, and I wouldn't go to an automatic EVER! It makes driving more enjoyable, and you feel like you have more control over the Jeep. Off-roading just makes it that much more fun!

It's the only way to go, it gives you time to "stop and smell the roses", works best on hills and the best in deep snow/traffic/gives time to manuever without stalling or "burning clutch"

I picked and auto for a few reasons. I like stick better in a sports car (Shifting while hauling is just plan fun). I do A LOT of city driving and it is my main vehicle. I got a great deal on it. And last but not least, I fear I will ruin the gears when I go climbing/offroading and I am sure I would stall on a hill. I have done it a few times on a manual 4wheeler and it was not pleasant... I had to roll all the way back down a hill once and start over.
Oh and with climbing I know the auto will lock its wheels in place when you are on a hill for a few seconds... just enough to switch from break pedal to the gas pedal. I don't know if the manuals have it or not though... so if they don't, then that is another good feature for me.
Manuals are great fun... I personally just don't feel comfortable safely taking one off road and not getting into trouble. :S
Weigh the pros and cons and pick which one better fits you.

|InfernoGirl||Every person I watched at the topless day obstacle course driving a manual, stalled out on top of the concrete barricade thingys... I think that is the major reason most prefer autos for rock crawling, and serious trails. If you stall a manual at the wrong time it can be very dangerous.|

My Rubi has an auto.
Like you, I struggled with the decision of which transmission to get. I've driven sticks most of my adult life and always preferred them but in recent years have had some physical issues (bad Achilles tendons) that made the auto seem as though it would be a better fit for me now.
After driving my Jeep both on and off road for some time I'm pleased with the choice that I made.
Off road, hands down I'm glad that I have the auto.
When I'm facing straight up a rock and all I can see is blue sky and my butt is all the way back in the seat and I can barely reach the throttle I'm glad I only have to juggle two pedals. When going down an equally steep obstacle, it crawls so slowly that it can sometimes get on my last nerve, but it is easily shifted to accommodate any terrain.
The only benefit I have seen with the stick is acceleration. I've driven friends rigs and yes, like any auto vs stick, you have more control and I have always loved that. What you don't have with the auto, is constant shifting in traffic. So if traffic is an issue for you, you may want to keep that in mind.
Over all, I am pleased with my decision and would make the same choice if I had to do it over again. For me, it's all about how much I like it "on the rocks".
The best thing you can do is to drive both and see which suits you best. Only you know what you're going to be happy with.

I'm a BIG fan of the standard. Mine is my daily driver and I enjoy the standard in all situations, city, highway, towing my trailer with almost capacity load for the jeep and find it especially useful in this circumstance being able to determine which gear for a specific load at whatever speed. I've wheeled it under various conditions and still feel that my choice of a standard was a good choice.
Don't let anybody convince you that an automatic is easier to wheel by just making a blind statement like that. I have to date seen no scientific evidence to that effect. HOWEVER Hilldweller has made the statement that he sometimes wheels in tough situations while drinking his coffee now THIS may be important to some folks and if that really floats yer boat then the automatic may be just for you. I'm a control freak and that is why I like the standard, when my baby is boggin' I want me to rescue it with the shifter, in an automatic you may not have that choice because the durn tootn' computitater has made that decision fer ya....get my meaning? A true hillbilly would want a standard so that those hills can be tamed right properly. Just having some fun with words here to demonstrate that the choice is truly personal. The most important part is what makes YOU happy and YOU are the one who will have to live with the decision on what type of transmission.

I have the manual, I can't say which is better cause I've never had the auto. I have always preferred manual but that's me, maybe its a control issue but I like the control it gives me over the vehicle and adds an extra dimension to driving that most people don't know or understand. I grew up on a manual, learned to drive on one so to me its more comfortable.Also keeps my left foot from feeling useless....

|drivebytruckerz||I have a 2000 Sport 4.0 I-6 with an automatic. It handles very well on and off the road. Unless you're planning on doing serious crawling you'll rarely run into any trouble. I've had both and either is great, but put your mind at ease about the automatic. Buy the one that makes you happy and that you enjoy driving every day. If that happens to be a stick.. then you can save a buck, but you won't save gas either way I've found.|

Finally getting my Jeep
After countless months of trying to sell my car it has finally happened. I now have the money for a down payment and will be getting my 2010 Jeep Wrangler Sport this weekend. I know this subject has been talked about a lot on this forum but I would like to get some feedback on manual vs auto. I am strongly leaning towards manual but if a deal comes along for an auto I think I'll take it. It will be a daily driver for me but I will also take it up to Colorado at least once a year and will be taking it off-road. I really enjoy driving a stick (currently driving and auto). I find myself getting bored while driving because I don't feel like I'm actually driving the car.
